** Universal Precautions Apply**

The primary purpose of your job position is to supervise the day-to-day nursing activities of the facility during your tour of duty. You will ensure that the highest degree of quality care is maintained at all times, following current Federal, State, and local standards.

** Delegation of Authority:**

As the Assistant Director Of Nursing, you are delegated the administrative authority, responsibility, and accountability necessary for carrying out your assigned duties

** Administrative Functions**

1. Direct the day-to-day functions of nursing activities, complying with rules, regulations, and guidelines.

2. Ensure the Nursing Service Procedures Manual is followed and reflects day-to-day nursing care procedures.

3. Assist in coordinating nursing services with other resident services for continuity of care.

4. Make sure all nursing service personnel are following their respective job descriptions.

5. Perform administrative duties, including completing medical forms, reports, evaluations, studies, and charting.

6. Participate in the facility’s quality assurance program for the nursing service department.

7. Review and update the resident’s written discharge plan as required.

8. Participate in authorized government agency surveys (inspections) and make reports/recommendations to the Director.

9. Interpret the department’s policies and procedures to personnel, residents, visitors, and government agencies.

10. Admit, transfer, and discharge residents as required.

** Charting and Documentation**

1. Fill out and complete accident/incident reports.

2. Chart all accidents/incidents involving residents.

3. Encourage attending physicians to review and sign their orders, progress notes, etc.

4. Chart nurses’ notes informatively and descriptively.

5. Complete and file record-keeping forms/carts upon resident admission, transfer, and/or discharge.

6. Transcribe physician’s orders to resident charts, medication cards, and treatment/care plans.

7. Ensure appropriate documentation concerning unauthorized discharges is entered in the resident’s medical record.

** Drug Administration Functions**

1. Prepare and administer medications as ordered by the physician.

2. Verify the identity of the resident before administering medication/treatment.

3. Order prescribed medications, supplies, and equipment as necessary.

4. Dispose of drugs and narcotics as required.

5. Review medication records for completeness, accuracy, and adherence to stop order policies.

6. Notify the Director of Nursing (DON) of all drug and narcotic discrepancies noted on your shift.

** Personnel Functions**

1. Inform the DON of staffing needs.

2. Develop work assignments and/or assist in completing and performing such tasks.

3. Make daily rounds to ensure nursing services personnel are performing work assignments according to nursing standards.

4. Report absentee call-ins to the DON.

5. Review complaints and grievances made or filed by assigned personnel and report to the DON.

6. Ensure fair disciplinary action without regard to race, color, creed, national origin, age, sex, religion, handicap, or marital status.

7. Develop and maintain good working rapport with inter-department personnel and other facility departments.

8. Create a positive work atmosphere and provide supervision and leadership to nursing personnel.

** Nursing Care Functions**

1. Inform nursing personnel of new admissions and ensure rooms are ready.

2. Make rounds with physicians as necessary.

3. Implement and maintain established nursing objectives and standards.
