An established and growing heavy civil construction company in Central Maine is seeking an experienced Heavy Civil / Highway Construction Estimator to join our leadership team. This is a high-impact position for a driven professional who wants to play a key role in the continued growth and long-term success of a respected contractor with a strong reputation for quality, execution, and integrity.
We are looking for a candidate with extensive estimating experience in heavy highway and civil construction who brings strong industry knowledge, strategic thinking, and leadership capabilities.
Position OverviewThe Estimator will lead the preparation of competitive and accurate bids for public and private infrastructure projects including:
- Roadway construction
- Site development
- Underground utilities
- Earthwork and excavation
- Drainage and stormwater systems
- Concrete and paving operations
- Municipal and DOT projects
This role is more than estimating — it is a leadership position within the company. The successful candidate will collaborate directly with ownership and senior management to help guide operational strategy, project selection, pricing structure, risk evaluation, and future growth initiatives.
Key Responsibilities- Prepare complete and accurate project estimates and bid proposals
- Analyze plans, specifications, contracts, and bid documents
- Perform quantity takeoffs and pricing for labor, equipment, and materials
- Solicit and evaluate subcontractor and supplier pricing
- Develop project schedules and production assumptions
- Identify project risks and value-engineering opportunities
- Attend pre-bid meetings and site visits
- Work closely with operations teams during project handoff
- Assist leadership with strategic planning and market analysis
- Help build and improve estimating systems and processes
- 5+ years of estimating experience in heavy civil, highway, or infrastructure construction
- Strong understanding of Maine DOT and municipal work preferred
- Proven ability to manage large and complex estimates independently
- Experience with excavation, utilities, grading, paving, concrete, and roadway construction
- Proficiency with estimating software and digital takeoff platforms
- Strong organizational, analytical, and communication skills
