PURPOSE:

This is a paraprofessional support position providing assistance to a professional teacher in a classroom or alternative education setting. Responsibilities include reviewing and reinforcing concepts previously introduced by the classroom teacher, assisting in drills or practice activities, performing non-instructional and on-evaluative functions, and assisting in the preparation of instructional materials. This position introduces new learning preplanned in consultation with the classroom teacher or appropriate content manager and performs short-term instruction in small classes or in community-based programs with indirect supervision.

Non-instructional work is performed under general administrative supervision.

The Department of Education operates three elementary schools in the Unorganized Territory:

REPRESENTATIVE TASKS:

* Works with individual students in devising sequences of educational experiences to achieve specified goals.

* Meets with and discusses curriculum areas with teacher or appropriate content specialist to understand and implement prepared lesson plans while under direct supervision.

* Serves as a resource person to students to facilitate individual learning programs.

* Coordinates, supervises and accompanies students on community-based learning experiences to offer alternate methods of instruction.

* Employs instructional methods and materials most appropriate for achieving stated goals to provide formal instruction.

* Performs classroom management functions to enhance the teacher's effectiveness and student learning environment.

* Assists with classroom behavioral management to minimize disruptions, ensure a safe and orderly classroom, and ensure students are on task.

* Maintains data on lessons taught to comply with prescribed documentation requirements and procedures.

* Reviews and analyzes student academic performance to monitor educational progress.

* Communicates with teacher, staff and parents to inform of student behavior and academic performance.

* Motivates students to do well in academic subjects to assist in completing educational requirements.

* Moves, lifts and assists with toileting and feeding of severely disabled students when required to meet functional life needs of students.

* Accompany students on field trips for the purpose of assisting with supervision.

* Assists with cafeteria, playground, bus and other related duties to meet non-instructional needs of students.

* Follows all applicable safety rules, procedures and regulations governing the proper manner of assistance for all students, including those with disabilities or other special needs.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

* Knowledge of basic academic school subjects.

* Knowledge of basic educational practices and techniques.

* Knowledge of basic student behavior management techniques.

* Knowledge of emergency, health, and safety procedures.

* Ability to work cooperatively in assisting the teacher.

* Ability to maintain effective relationships with students.

* Ability to handle student behavior in a calm, confident manner.

* Ability to use discretion in handling confidential student information.

* Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form.
