Job DescriptionFunctional Life Skills Teacher - Grades 3-5
Crooked River Elementary School in Casco, Maine is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Special Education Teacher to lead a Functional Life Skills classroom serving students in grades 3–5. This role focuses on supporting students with diverse learning needs in developing essential academic, social, communication, and daily living skills to promote independence and success across settings.
Key Responsibilities- Design and implement Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) aligned with student needs
- Provide direct instruction in functional academics, communication, social-emotional skills, and daily living skills
- Use evidence-based practices and differentiated instruction to support a range of abilities
- Collect and analyze data to monitor student progress and adjust instruction accordingly
- Collaborate with general education teachers, therapists, ed techs, and families
- Supervise and support educational technicians within the classroom
- Foster a structured, safe, and inclusive learning environment
- Support positive behavior interventions and crisis prevention strategies as needed
- Participate in IEP meetings, team planning, and professional development

- Qualifications:
- Valid Maine certification as a Teacher of Students with Disabilities (e.g., 282 or equivalent) – required
- Fingerprinting and certification through the Department of Education – required
- Bachelor’s degree required;
Master’s degree in Special Education – preferred - Experience working with elementary students with diverse needs, including autism and developmental disabilities – preferred
- Knowledge of functional life skills curriculum and applied behavior strategies – preferred
- Strong communication, collaboration, and organizational skills – preferred
- Experience with augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) – preferred
- Familiarity with behavior intervention plans (BIPs) and data-driven instruction – preferred
- Training in crisis prevention/intervention (Safety Care) – preferred
- At least 1 year(s) of relevant experience preferred.
- Bachelor degree preferred.
