Sumner Memorial School is a small, close‑knit school serving approximately 210 students in grades 9-12. Located in Sullivan, Maine, just 15 minutes outside of Ellsworth and 45 minutes from Bar Harbor, our school values strong relationships, collaboration, and a commitment to helping every student succeed.

High School Social Studies Teacher

The High School Social Studies Teacher is responsible for planning and delivering engaging and appropriate instruction that supports the academic and personal growth of all students. This role includes designing lessons that promote critical thinking, inquiry, and meaningful connections to real‑world issues across disciplines such as history, geography, government, and economics.

The ideal candidate will foster curiosity about the past and present while helping students develop the skills necessary to become informed, thoughtful, and active citizens. They will create a classroom environment that is inclusive, student‑centered, and responsive to diverse learning needs, using a variety of instructional strategies and assessments to ensure student success.

This teacher will work closely with content‑area colleagues and collaborate across departments to support interdisciplinary learning and a cohesive educational experience for students. Responsibilities include participating in professional learning communities, contributing to curriculum development, and maintaining clear and consistent communication with students, families, and staff.

Strong communication, organization, and collaboration skills are essential, along with a commitment to continuous professional growth and reflective practice. The successful candidate will build positive relationships with students and colleagues, contribute to a supportive school culture, and actively engage in the life of the school community.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Social Studies, History, Education, or a related field (Master's preferred)
  • Valid state teaching certification in Social Studies (#200S 7-12) or eligibility
  • Current Maine Department of Education Criminal History Records Check.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage students through dynamic and differentiated instruction
  • Experience with culturally responsive teaching practices and inclusive classrooms
  • Strong classroom management and organizational skills
