Sumner Middle School is a small, close-knit school serving approximately 160 students in grades 6 & 8. Located in Sullivan, Maine, just 15 minutes outside of Ellsworth and 45 minutes from Bar Harbor, our school values strong relationships, collaboration, and a commitment to helping every student succeed.
Position SummaryWe are seeking an organized, energetic, and student-centered Middle School Physical Education Teacher who is passionate about helping students build healthy habits, teamwork skills, and confidence through physical activity. The Middle School Physical Education Teacher is responsible for planning and delivering engaging, standards‑based physical education instruction to students in grades 6‑8. The ideal candidate will create a positive and inclusive learning environment that encourages participation, sportsmanship, fitness, and personal growth.
This teacher will work closely with grade‑level teams, classroom teachers, and staff across departments to support the academic, social, and emotional success of students. Strong communication, organization, and collaboration skills are essential.
- Plan and deliver engaging physical education instruction aligned to Maine Learning Results and district curriculum.
- Create a safe, structured, and positive learning environment that promotes student participation and success.
- Teach skills related to physical fitness, teamwork, sportsmanship, cooperation, and healthy lifestyles.
- Develop lessons and activities that encourage lifelong wellness and physical activity.
- Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners and varying skill levels.
- Monitor and communicate student progress through ongoing assessment and feedback.
- Maintain organized lesson plans, records, equipment, and communication with students and families.
- Collaborate regularly with grade‑level teachers and other departments to support interdisciplinary learning and student success.
- Participate actively in team meetings, Professional Learning Groups, and school‑wide initiatives.
- Build strong relationships with students and families through consistent, positive communication.
- Support and contribute to a school culture focused on belonging, accountability, and academic success.
- Valid Maine teaching certification in Physical Education or eligibility for certification.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Demonstrated passion for working with middle school students.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team in a small‑school environment.
- Commitment to building positive relationships with students, families, and colleagues.
- Familiarity with BARR (Building Assets, Reducing Risks) and PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) frameworks.
- Experience working collaboratively across grade levels and departments.
- Experience promoting student wellness and social‑emotional growth through physical activity.
- Experience using student data to inform instruction and support student growth.
The successful candidate must hold, or be eligible for, a Maine Department of Education Teacher Certification in Physical Education and/or a general (#020 General K-8) certification. Candidates must also hold a current Maine Department of Education Criminal History Records Check.
