Teacher Assistant/ Paraprofessional, Special Education Assistant
Job Description
Educational Technician III – Special Education. Reports to Building Principal or Designee. Work year: school year. Job goal: assist teaching staff in maintaining classroom environment for students to take full advantage of instructional program and learning resources.
Qualifications- Documentation of at least 3 years of post‑secondary education or 90 hours of approved study in an educationally related field.
- Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
- Understanding of instructional process and the needs of students, including students with special needs.
- Knowledge of emergency, health, and safety procedures (preferred).
- Willingness to participate in ongoing in‑service training as requested.
- Must hold or be eligible for Maine Educational Technician III Authorization and CHRC Approval Certificate.
- Maintain high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality regarding student information as required by law.
- Demonstrated aptitude or competence for successful fulfillment of assigned responsibilities.
- Prior experience in an educational setting desirable but not required.
- Instructional Support – Work with individual students or small groups to review and reinforce learning; assist teachers in developing strategies; guide independent study, enrichment, and remedial work.
- Non‑Instructional / Non‑Evaluative Functions – Administer, score, and record achievement or diagnostic tests; assist students with instructional materials and equipment; provide input to the IEP process and parent conferences when requested.
- Computer Lab Responsibilities – Provide primary support for lab technology, including troubleshooting, maintenance, and software installation or upgrades; basic network support; maintain hardware and software inventory; prepare budget and order supplies; support staff in using mobile lab technology; assist in integrating technology into curriculum and lesson plans.
- Preparation of Instructional Materials – Classroom: copying, typing, filing, cutting, laminating, bulletin board preparation, classroom calendars, and book orders;
Library/Media: check materials in and out, shelve, catalog new materials. - Classroom and Student Supervision – Assist with playground/recess duty, bus duty, study hall, detention, lunch supervision, emergency drills, assemblies, field trips, and other school activities; escort and assistance services as needed.
- Library / Media Support – Assist students in locating materials; collaborate with Library/Media Specialist on story hours and media presentations.
- Special Education Support – Provide escort and assistance services; assist with IEP meeting preparation.
- Substitute Support – Serve as primary source of information and assistance for substitute teachers.
- Instructional Assistance – Introduce new learning activities pre‑planned with classroom teacher or content specialist.
Employee must be able to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods; climb stairs, bend, kneel, crouch, push, pull; lift 25–75 pounds depending on student needs. Reasonable accommodations may be made for individuals with disabilities.
Terms of EmploymentSalary, work year, and working conditions will be established by the RSU 57 School Board. Performance will be evaluated in accordance with School Board policy.
