Long-Term Substitute Teacher
Current long-term substitute rates for the 2026–2027 school year are based on length of assignment, certification, and the following pay structure:
- Days 1–10: $23.33 per hour
- Days 11–59: $30.00 per hour
- 60+ days: $41.59 per hour
As a Long-Term Substitute Teacher, you will serve as a dynamic educator, instructional leader, and positive influence within the classroom. You will be expected to deliver measurable results through intentional instructional planning, effective curriculum delivery, and meaningful student engagement designed to improve student outcomes and support student growth.
Long-Term Substitute Teachers are expected to:
- Plan instruction using approved curriculum, high-impact instructional strategies, and student data to meet the needs of all learners
- Establish expectations, routines, and procedures that create a respectful, safe, and student-centered learning environment
- Engage students through differentiated instructional practices and meaningful learning experiences
- Use assessment data to monitor progress, guide instruction, and provide timely feedback to students and families
- Collaborate with colleagues and contribute positively to overall district effectiveness
- Demonstrate professionalism, leadership, and effective communication in all aspects of the role
- Support RSU 21's commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI)
Reports To:
School Principal
Successful candidates will demonstrate a passion for education, high expectations for students, and a commitment to creating inclusive and engaging learning environments. Candidates should possess strong instructional practices, effective classroom management skills, and the ability to collaborate with colleagues and families.
Required Qualifications- Bachelor's degree or higher
- Valid Maine teaching certification or eligibility for appropriate endorsement
- Knowledge of effective instructional and classroom management practices
- Ability to design and deliver differentiated instruction
- Strong communication and collaboration skills
- Commitment to equitable and inclusive educational practices
- Prior classroom teaching experience
- Demonstrated success improving student learning outcomes
- Experience with standards-based curriculum and assessment practices
- National Board Certification (preferred, but not required)
- Develop standards-based lesson plans aligned to approved curriculum
- Use student data and assessment results to inform instructional planning
- Differentiate instruction to meet diverse student needs
- Integrate educational technology strategically to enhance learning
- Adjust pacing and instruction based on student progress and performance
- Establish and maintain effective classroom routines and procedures
- Foster a safe, respectful, and inclusive classroom environment
- Promote student engagement, inquiry, collaboration, and intellectual risk-taking
- Maintain positive relationships with students and families
- Deliver engaging, rigorous, and differentiated instruction
- Utilize a variety of instructional strategies to support student learning
- Communicate clear learning targets and expectations
- Regularly assess student understanding using formative and summative assessments
- Connect instruction to real-world applications and interdisciplinary learning
- Use relevant student data to guide instructional decisions
- Set and monitor meaningful short- and long-term learning goals
- Engage students in tracking their own academic progress
- Support efforts to reduce achievement gaps among student groups
- Collaborate with colleagues across grade levels, departments, and schools
- Participate in professional learning and continuous improvement efforts
- Reflect on instructional effectiveness and implement feedback to improve practice
- Apply culturally responsive teaching practices
- Promote inclusive classroom experiences that value diverse perspectives
- Support RSU 21's equity initiatives and DEI priorities
- Reflect on personal biases and commit to ongoing DEI learning and growth
- Demonstrate professionalism consistent with district expectations and ethical standards
