Title:
Literacy/Numeracy Specialist
- Master's degree in Literacy preferred
- Maintains or is eligible for MDOE certification
- At least 5 years successful teaching experience; experience in literacy/numeracy and experience collaborating with adults to ensure student success preferred
- Thorough knowledge of literacy development for the elementary student; excellent written and oral communication skills. Ability to interact positively and collaboratively with a variety of people, including children and adults; ability to keep paperwork organized; and keep information confidential
- Successful background, criminal records, fingerprinting and reference check
Reports to:
Building Principal/Director of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment
Coordinates with:
Classroom Teachers, Resource Teachers, Support Staff
- To directly serve learners in academic intervention settings
- To directly support educators in the classroom setting
- To advise District on compliance as it relates to academic intervention services
- Works with and engages individual students or small groups of students to serve as a resource in academic intervention services helping students achieve academically in the classroom
- Provides instructional leadership for the Literacy/Numeracy program
- Designs and/or initiates effective literacy programs for the Literacy/Numeracy caseload, including delivery of educational services to students and overseeing the delivery of educational services by educational technicians
- Responsible for evaluating and progress monitoring students and collaborating with classroom teachers, educational technicians, and other educational providers to create successful student literacy interventions
- Uses both formative and summative assessments to help implement strategies with students to support their increased academic achievement
- Responsible for following guidelines to determine student program eligibility in their buildings, including data collection, creating grade level lists, and reviewing student data with the Director, building administrator, other specialists, and educational technicians
- Participates in monthly staff meetings, follows through on tasks discussed, and readily shares information with other staff members
- Works with the Director and other specialists to research assessment tools that help identify our population of students, and/or gain further diagnostic information about students
- Is educated on the requirements of any district adopted literacy/numeracy program
- Monitors school‑by‑school supplies and instructional materials to ensure students' needs are met
- Completes all required paperwork in an accurate and timely manner. Writes student progress reports, and reviews those done by educational technicians, and places them in student files in an accurate and timely manner
- Supports family engagement activities; organizes and helps facilitate events, distributes district wide Title I parent‑student communications, i.e. newsletter, event notices, and other communications
- Writes and distributes school based parent‑student notices; and distributes district wide parent‑student communications written by the Director, i.e. newsletters, event notices, and other communications
- Participates in new employee orientation and trainings for ed. techs assigned to his/her building, and assists new literacy specialists as requested
- Maintains good rapport with colleagues and other staff
- Keeps informed and collaborates with the Director on regulatory matters
- Participates in ongoing professional development to stay current on literacy research and practices
- Maintains confidentiality regarding records, conversations, test results, and classroom work
- Performs all other related duties as assigned
