QualificationsA Master's Degree in Elementary Counseling or similar degree is preferred. Must hold a valid State of Maine certificate in counseling.
Ability to effectively communicate and work cooperatively with students, staff and families.
Job Goals- Design and implement a school counseling program aligned with ASCA National Standards and the Maine Comprehensive School Counseling Program Model 2.0, including direct instruction, individual and group sessions, and crisis response.
- Provide dynamic, engaging lessons to students via classroom visits, community assemblies, small groups, etc., as part of a counseling team connected to students.
- Collaborate with a team that builds relationships with families and students, providing support and barrier reduction.
- Further development and implementation of MTSS-B System and Structures to support student needs.
- Plan and deliver counseling services for grades PK-5 in coordination with counselors and administrators, including curricular materials for direct instruction that meet learning objectives.
- Provide short‑term individual and group counseling, available for self‑referrals and referrals from staff, families, and others.
- Implement programs such as Yale RULER, Strong Start/Strong Kids, Social Thinking to support students’ social and emotional development.
- Provide crisis intervention when needed.
- Maintain student communication privilege and prioritize confidentiality.
- Consult collaboratively with families, faculty, administrators, and professionals regarding student needs.
- Refer students to out‑of‑school professionals when necessary.
- Make classroom observations as needed.
- Adhere to the Code of Ethics for school counselors by the American School Counseling Association.
- Assist new students in adjusting to school and establishing conduct standards.
- Conduct research on health, guidance, and remediation.
- Provide counseling on educational or personal problems.
- Help teachers understand special needs or challenges of students and their families.
- Interpret diagnoses to school personnel when appropriate.
- Serve on committees such as attendance teams, MTSS-B, etc.
Frequent sitting, standing, walking, and climbing stairs. Tasks include bending, pulling, pushing, kneeling, and crouching. May need to lift 25–75 lbs depending on student size and situational needs. Reasonable accommodations may be made.
