Job Description

Regional School Unit 57 – PreK Special Education Teacher

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree required (Master's preferred) in Early Childhood or Early Childhood Special Education
  • Holds or is eligible for Maine DOE Certification 282 (Teacher of Students with Disabilities, Birth–Grade
    5)
  • Minimum of 3 years of successful teaching experience in an early childhood special education classroom
  • Experience supervising Educational Technicians (Ed Techs)
  • Strong knowledge of early childhood special education best practices
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with children, families, and multidisciplinary teams
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Successful completion of background check, fingerprinting, and reference checks

  • Assistant Special Education Director
  • Consults with Special Education PreK Strategist

Position Summary

The PreK Special Education Teacher develops and maintains a developmentally appropriate preschool classroom that supports children with disabilities. This role includes responsibility for lesson planning, progress monitoring, and reporting for all students on the caseload. As a classroom leader, the teacher supervises and supports Ed Techs to deliver individualized instruction aligned with each student's IEP. The teacher collaborates closely with the broader educational team to ensure consistency across all learning environments and transitions.

Key Responsibilities
  • Ensure consistent adherence to health and safety standards in alignment with district policies
  • Plan and implement lessons, activities, and therapeutic strategies throughout the school day
  • Foster student development across social, emotional, physical, and cognitive domains
  • Align instruction with district curriculum and scope and sequence
  • Develop, implement, and maintain compliance with Individualized Education Plans (IEPs)
  • Monitor and document student progress using observations, assessments, and data collection
  • Integrate IEP goals into daily routines and classroom activities
  • Maintain regular communication with families through meetings, newsletters, and logs
  • Collaborate with behavior specialists to implement behavior support plans with fidelity
  • Supervise and direct Ed Tech staff to support student learning effectively
  • Utilize technology to support communication and learning needs
  • Complete daily attendance, documentation, and billing requirements
  • Support students with activities of daily living (ADLs)
  • Respond to emergencies using CPR and crisis intervention protocols
  • Perform additional duties as assigned
Physical Demands
  • Frequent standing, sitting, walking, bending, kneeling, and crouching
  • Ability to lift 25–75 pounds depending on student needs
  • Active engagement in classroom and student support activities
Terms of Employment

Salary, work year, and working conditions are determined by the RSU 57 School Board and applicable collective bargaining agreements.

Evaluation

Performance will be evaluated in accordance with School Board policies.
