Position Title: Regular Elementary Teacher

Position Summary

To teach elementary students in PK – Grade 5 level using the curricula as established by the district for each content area aligning with the Maine Learning Results.

Qualifications
  • Bachelors Degree required; and
  • Maine Department of Education Teacher Endorsement Certificate eligibility required;
  • Maine Department of Education Fingerprinting required.
Duties and Responsibilities

The responsibilities outlined below are representative and do not encompass or define all tasks that may be required by this position.

  • Plans the implementation of the course of study suitable for the particular grade level following the curriculum guidelines of the school district and the Maine Learning Results;
  • Develops and presents specific lesson plans that reflect best educational practices. Instruction is modified to implement IEPs and 504 plans. This includes using a variety of strategies, including lectures, projects, group discussions, exhibits, field trips, audio-visual and library resources, computers and the Internet;
  • Implements by instruction and action both the district's philosophy and the school's mission statement and objectives;
  • Maintains a safe and nurturing classroom environment conducive to effective learning within the limits of the resources provided by the district;
  • Conducts standardized testing in accordance with district policy and state law, and analyzes data to improve student learning;
  • Prepares assignments for student practice and materials presented. Provides timely feedback for students and parents on this work;
  • Develops a variety of assessments to measure student progress. Provides timely feedback for students and parents on these assessments;
  • Maintains order in classroom and administers discipline when necessary to achieve proper behavior;
  • Shares with other staff, lunchroom duties, recess and bus supervision;
  • Maintains accurate and complete records as required by law, district policy and administrative guidelines;
  • Keeps parents informed of student progress through regularly scheduled progress reports and parent-teacher conferences as well as direct contact with parents when student performance declines or as requested by parents;
  • Articulates clearly criteria for all Maine Learning Results standards as assessed on student progress reports;
  • Maintains a minimum of monthly written communication with parents about classroom activities;
  • Helps students to devise strategies to overcome academic, social, or behavioral issues;
  • Prepares the budget for the classroom on an annual basis in conjunction with the guidelines established by the district and school administration;
  • Maintains furniture, equipment and textbook inventories for the classroom on an annual basis;
  • Consults with other professionals when there appears to be evidence of learning disabilities or problems of social adjustment with a student. Coordinates decisions with parents concerning specialized intervention that appears warranted;
  • Reports cases of suspected child abuse according to state law and district policy;
  • Attends team meetings, faculty meetings, IEP meetings, and 504 Plan meetings as directed by the building principal;
  • Recommends and participates in the placement of students in an appropriate grade/classroom for the ensuing year;
  • Possess the ability to read and interpret documents such as district policy manuals, teacher handbooks, curriculum guidelines, state and national standards and all curriculum material;
  • Demonstrates continuous professional growth; and
  • Maintains current appropriate state certification for teaching assignment.
