Special Educator Position at Pond Cove Elementary

Pond Cove Elementary is a high-performing K4 school serving more than 550 students and employing approximately 80 staff members. We are seeking a positive, hardworking, and highly effective special educator who demonstrates strong instructional skills, a commitment to student success, and a willingness to contribute to our collaborative school community.

The successful candidate will join a dedicated special education team that includes: five special education teachers, two speech-language pathologists, one occupational therapist, one physical therapist, one elementary academic evaluator, two school social workers, one district BCBA, and one district school psychologist. Responsibilities include designing, implementing, and monitoring high-quality, specially designed instruction (SDI) that addresses students' individualized learning needs and drives progress toward IEP goals.

The successful candidate will plan and deliver engaging, evidence-based instruction; implement assessments to monitor student growth; and collaborate closely with colleagues, families, and service providers to ensure student success. The position also includes special education case management responsibilities, including the development and maintenance of IEPs, progress monitoring, documentation, meeting scheduling and facilitation, and ensuring compliance with all state and federal special education regulations, timelines, and procedural requirements.

The position includes supervision duties such as lunch and recess coverage, participation in school events and activities, and collaboration with a large number of colleagues, including school social workers, instructional coaches, the Director of Special Services, and building administrators.

Bachelor's degree; master's degree or higher preferred. Maine Teacher of Exceptional Students Certification (282). Maine Criminal History Record Check (CHRC).

The successful candidate will demonstrate: knowledge of special education law, regulations, procedural safeguards, and compliance requirements, including the ability to manage timelines, maintain accurate documentation, and facilitate IEP meetings effectively. Knowledge of evidence-based instructional practices and the ability to design and implement specially designed instruction that addresses students' unique learning needs and promotes meaningful progress toward IEP goals. The ability to collect, analyze, and use data to inform instructional decisions and differentiate support for students.

Demonstrated ability to effectively manage a special education caseload while balancing instructional responsibilities, communication with families, and compliance requirements.

Explicit and systematic instructional programs (e.g., SPIRE, Wilson, Fundations, Lindamood-Bell, Orton-Gillingham). Responsive Classroom Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS). Supporting students with a range of learning, behavioral, and developmental needs. Designing and delivering engaging, hands-on, and high-interest intervention lessons.

The successful candidate will: design, implement, and evaluate specially designed instruction that is individualized, data-driven, and aligned with students' IEP goals and identified needs. Deliver rigorous, high-quality instruction and assessment across academic content areas. Establish clear expectations, consistent routines, and a supportive learning environment that promotes student success. Foster students' academic, social-emotional, and behavioral growth. Embrace shared responsibility for the success of the school community, including participation in duties, meetings, and school events.

Collaborate effectively with colleagues, specialists, administrators, and families to support student outcomes. Maintain compliance with all special education requirements and paperwork while ensuring that students and families receive high-quality, responsive support.
