Erskine Academy, an independent town academy established in 1883, seeks an experienced, student-centered Special Education Teacher starting in the academic year. Located in the scenic central Maine town of South China, the Academy serves 530 students in grades 9-12 and maintains a tradition of academic excellence, an orderly and structured school climate, and community engagement.
Works as both a case manager and academic support teacher, working closely with students, families, counselors, and classroom teachers to ensure students receive the accommodations, instruction, and advocacy necessary to thrive. Emphasizes relationship-building, individualized support, and collaboration with general education faculty to help students develop the skills and confidence needed for success in high school and beyond.
Position open beginning the academic year.
Essential Responsibilities- Manage a caseload of students with disabilities, ensuring compliance with all state and federal special education requirements.
- Develop, implement, and monitor Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
- Coordinate annual reviews, reevaluations, progress monitoring, transition planning, and required documentation.
- Provide direct academic support and specialized instruction through individual and small-group interventions.
- Support students in developing executive functioning, organization, study skills, self‑advocacy, and independence.
- Collaborate closely with general education teachers to ensure students are successful in mainstream classrooms and have access to appropriate accommodations and supports.
- Serve as an advocate for students while helping them assume increasing responsibility for their own learning.
- Maintain strong communication and partnerships with families, teachers, counselors, and outside service providers.
- Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings and special education eligibility determinations.
- Foster a positive, structured, and supportive learning environment that promotes student growth, resilience, and confidence.
- Contribute positively to the broader school community through participation in school activities and events.
- Bachelor's degree in Special Education or related field.
- Maine Teacher Certification in Special Education (282 – Teacher of Children with Disabilities) or eligibility to obtain certification.
- Knowledge of special education law, regulations, and best practices.
- Strong understanding of accommodations, differentiated instruction, and evidence-based interventions.
- Excellent communication, organizational, and collaborative skills.
- Demonstrated ability to build positive relationships with students, families, and colleagues.
- Master's degree in Special Education or related field.
- Three or more years of successful experience in secondary special education.
- Experience managing IEP caseloads and facilitating IEP meetings.
- Experience supporting students in inclusive educational settings.
- Familiarity with transition planning and college/career readiness programming.
- Experience utilizing data to inform instructional and intervention decisions.
