University Professor, College Lecturer
The School of Biology and Ecology (SBE) at the University of Maine seeks applicants for a full-time, 10.5-month Lecturer position (non-tenure track). This faculty member will be part of a dynamic introductory undergraduate biology education team. The anticipated start date is January 1, 2027. This full-time, ongoing (just-cause track) appointment is based in Orono, Maine, and is renewable annually based on satisfactory performance.
Dutiesand Responsibilities
This position is a 100% teaching appointment. Instructional duties will include teaching in our first‑year introductory biology sequence: BIO 100 – Basic Biology and BIO 200 – Biology of Organisms either alone or as a co‑instructor. The successful candidate’s teaching will be integrated with that of other faculty and professionals dedicated to first‑year instruction – delivering lectures each semester in a large‑enrollment setting.
The successful candidate will also be involved in on‑line teaching of lower‑level biology courses and assessment of these courses. Instructional duties may change over time in response to SBE needs. The successful candidate will also advise undergraduate majors, participate in student recruitment and orientation, and be a fully participating faculty member in SBE.
The successful candidate will be expected to be an effective and engaging teacher, to make a strong commitment to the development and delivery of interactive and innovative content based on current evidence‑based STEM pedagogy and assessment and an ongoing commitment to continually improving and developing their own effective pedagogy. They will also collaborate with colleagues involved in teaching introductory biology courses or managing the introductory lab courses to improve curricula and increase student success.
Essential duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Teaching introductory biology classes: BIO 100 – Basic Biology and BIO 200 – Biology of Organisms
- Teaching on‑line courses in lower‑level biology courses
- Collaborating on improving curricula with colleagues in the introductory biology team
- Advising undergraduate majors
- Participating in student recruitment and orientation and providing service to the school, college and university as suitable
Required:
- A PhD or Masters (or equivalent) in biology or closely related field
- Significant college‑level teaching experience
- Demonstrated evidence of high‑quality teaching
- Effective oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills
- More than two years of experience teaching first‑year introductory biology courses
- Experience teaching online and in person
- Documented participation in activities promoting inclusive excellence
Preferred:
- More than two years of experience teaching first‑year introductory biology courses
- Experience teaching online and in person
- Documented participation in activities promoting inclusive excellence
- Proficient in Microsoft Office products and experience in Brightspace or other course management software
