Primary purpose of this position is to provide leadership for the development, implementation, and evaluation of a livestock and forage educational program in Surry County, covering consumer and commercial livestock production, pasture management, animal nutrition, animal waste management, pond management, and leadership in developing the 4‑H and youth livestock program.

• Develop and maintain organized programs that follow NC Cooperative Extension, county, and national laws, policies, and guidelines.
• Determine clientele needs and impact by assessing and evaluating the agriculture program and services on a regular basis.
• Work collaboratively with other Extension programs, staff, agencies, and community organizations to meet the needs of the agricultural community.
• Network with agents, specialists, and local agriculture producers to plan and implement innovative field days/educational programs.
• Promote agriculture within the county.
• Engage the agricultural community, including contract poultry growers, beef producers, sheep and goat producers, crop‑livestock mixed farms, and potential new farmers.
• Assist in developing the 4‑H & youth livestock program, working closely with local cattlemen’s association and other county departments to bring resources to clientele and provide guidance on business planning and management.
• Collaborate with the county pesticide coordinator to provide educational pesticide training opportunities.
• Develop and market educational programs with measurable impacts and collaborate with other agencies, groups, and organizations to reach intended audiences throughout the county.

• One of the following educational requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree with a cumulative GPA of 2.5 overall or 3.0 in an agricultural or related field.
  • Bachelor’s degree with at least half of a Master’s degree curriculum completed and a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.
  • Completion of a Master’s degree with an agricultural or related field of study.
• A bachelor’s degree in animal science, crop science, agronomy, or a related agricultural field is required.
• Experience working with a wide variety of livestock and crops.
• Travel within the county and occasional travel outside the county/district is required.
• A Master’s degree is preferred.
• Extension or other professional experience, including high level of computer competency, is desired.
