Position Overview

Interdisciplinary Studies is one of the five core classes on our middle school teams and represents a unique opportunity to design and deliver meaningful, engaging learning experiences. Grounded in inquiry- and project-based learning, this course allows teachers the professional freedom to be creative, innovative, and responsive to student interests. Centered on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, students explore complex global issues through a local lens, engaging in authentic work that matters.

Teachers in this role guide students as they think critically, collaborate purposefully, and apply their learning across content areas. This course is ideal for educators who are passionate about interdisciplinary teaching, real-world connections, and student-centered learning. It offers the rare chance to move beyond traditional boundaries and truly inspire curiosity, creativity, and deep understanding. Candidates from a variety of content backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

Any applicant holding appropriate Maine certification with a passion for innovative, interdisciplinary instruction will be considered.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in specific area of teaching
  • Holds appropriate Maine Department of Education Certification
  • Specific preparation to teach at the appropriate level

Reports to:

Building administration (Principal and/or Assistant Principal)

Job Goal:

To deliver appropriate instruction and services to students and ensure that all students develop the knowledge, skills, and habits of work to become successful individuals and citizens

Performance Responsibilities
  • Plans a program of study that meets the needs, interests, and abilities of students in a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interest of students
  • Guides the learning process towards the achievement of curriculum goals and establishes clear objectives for all lessons and projects
  • Creates a classroom environment that encourages student participation and is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of students
  • Employs instructional methods and materials that are appropriate for meeting stated objectives
  • Assesses the accomplishments of students on a regular basis and provides feedback as required
  • Assesses the learning difficulties of students on a regular basis, seeking the assistance of district specialists as required
  • Strives to improve professionally as an educator
  • Assists the administration in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct, and, for the classroom, develops reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedure, and maintains order in the classroom in a fair and just manner
  • Attends staff meetings, serves on staff committees, and is an active participant in all Professional Learning Communities
  • Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect the students, equipment, materials, funds, and facilities
  • Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulations
  • Organizes classes and work so that substitute teachers can function with the minimum loss of learning for students
  • Uses community resources when available
  • Makes provisions for being available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day when required or requested to do so under reasonable terms
  • Performs such other tasks and assumes such other responsibilities that may be assigned from time to time
