LONG-TERM SUBSTITUTE TEACHER

Middle School English Language Arts (ELA)

About The Position

Acton School is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Long-Term Substitute Middle School ELA Teacher to step into an existing classroom beginning in mid-to-late February 2027. This is a fantastic opportunity for an educator who is passionate about literacy, loves working with middle schoolers, and wants to make a meaningful impact during a critical stretch of the school year. The successful candidate will take over an established classroom, continuing instruction in reading, writing, grammar, and literature, while maintaining continuity of curriculum and building strong relationships with students.

Key Responsibilities
  • Deliver engaging ELA instruction aligned with grade-level standards and existing curriculum plans
  • Continue instruction in reading comprehension, literary analysis, grammar, vocabulary, and writing skills
  • Plan and adapt lessons using provided curriculum and pacing guides
  • Grade assignments, provide timely feedback, and maintain accurate grade books
  • Manage classroom behavior and maintain a positive, structured learning environment
  • Communicate professionally with students, parents/guardians, and colleagues
  • Collaborate with grade-level and subject-area teams
  • Attend staff meetings, professional development sessions, and parent conferences as required
  • Support students with diverse learning needs, including IEPs and 504 plans, in coordination with support staff
  • Administer and proctor assessments as scheduled
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree required; degree in English, Education, or related field preferred
  • Valid Maine teaching certification or substitute teaching credential (or eligibility to obtain one)
  • Prior experience teaching middle school ELA strongly preferred
  • Strong classroom management skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to build rapport with early adolescent learners
  • Reliable, adaptable, and able to start with minimal onboarding time
