The School of Nursing at the University of Maine seeks applicants for a full-time, academic-year, tenure-track, Associate/Full Professor position. The initial appointment for this position will be to serve as the PI on an existing Department of Education Grant to launch New England’s first PhD program in Nursing. The successful candidate will provide academic leadership for the development and implementation of the program.

The faculty member will ensure the quality and alignment of the PhD curriculum, support faculty teaching within the program, recruit and mentor doctoral students, and develop partnerships with healthcare organizations and institutions of higher education. The position will also advance the School of Nursing’s research mission through an active program of scholarship, grant development, research dissemination, and doctoral‑student mentorship. The faculty member will teach graduate and undergraduate nursing courses as assigned and contribute service to the School, University, profession, and public.

At the conclusion of the DOE grant, the teaching, research, and administrative responsibilities will be negotiated based on ongoing need.
Typical hiring range for this position is $80,000 to $95,000commensurate with qualifications and experience.

PhD program leadership throughout the funded Department of Education grant

In collaboration with the Associate Director of Graduate Programs and the SON Director:

  • Provide academic leadership for Northern New England’s first PhD program in Nursing.
  • Guide the implementation, evaluation, and continuous improvement of the PhD program.
  • Ensure that courses and curricula align with program outcomes, University requirements, and applicable professional and accreditation standards.
  • Facilitate collaboration among PhD faculty to promote cohesive, rigorous, and high‑quality course design and instruction.
  • Coordinate the program’s required immersion experiences.
  • Recruit prospective PhD students and support activities designed to promote enrollment and retention.
  • Meet with prospective students and provide information about the program, admissions process, curriculum, and career pathways.
  • Develop partnerships with healthcare organizations, academic institutions, and other stakeholders to promote the PhD program and expand opportunities for collaboration.
  • Seek internal and external funding to support PhD students, research, and program development.
Ongoing responsibilities Teaching and student mentorship
  • Teach graduate and undergraduate nursing courses as assigned.
  • Develop and deliver high‑quality, evidence‑informed instruction across appropriate teaching modalities.
  • Advise and mentor doctoral students throughout their programs of study.
  • Mentor students in research development, scholarly writing, dissemination, and grant preparation.
  • Chair or serve on dissertation committees, as assigned.
  • Participate in the assessment of student learning and ongoing evaluation of courses and curricula.

Research and scholarship
  • Maintain an active and sustained research agenda within the faculty member’s area of expertise.
  • Pursue internal and external funding to support research, doctoral education, and student scholarship.
  • Disseminate scholarly work through peer‑reviewed publications and presentations at regional, national, and international conferences.
  • Collaborate with faculty, students, healthcare organizations, and other partners on research and scholarly initiatives.
  • Engage doctoral students in research, grant development, publication, and scholarly dissemination.
