Overview

Experienced Substation Design Engineer role at WSP in the U.S. Office in Freeport, ME or Foxborough, MA. Work with the Power Delivery Substation Team to design transmission and distribution substations, protection and control systems. Provide technical assistance for due diligence, investigation, remediation, permitting, design, and construction. Generate reports and documentation. Ensure quality that meets or exceeds industry standards.

Responsibilities
  • Collect, compile, and analyze data for substation components, equipment specifications, procurement packages, IFR/IRC design, IEEE/NESC standards, and NERC regulations.
  • Review third‑party design documents, procurement lists, and project plans.
  • Perform professional electrical engineering work for single line diagrams, wiring diagrams, general arrangement, substation layout, bus arrangement, grounding grid, and lightning protection in compliance with applicable rules, standards, and permits.
  • Incorporate future‑ready techniques, concept development, operating strategies, and equipment sizing and cabling, AC/DC panel design, conduit and trenching design strategies that account for safety and functionality.
  • Support senior engineers with research and recommendations on fundamental components, field equipment applications, and operations.
  • Verify site characteristics and provide technical assistance on engineering, design, testing, maintenance modifications, and construction procedures.
  • Develop electrical calculations for loads, equipment sizing, feeder sizing, voltage drop, grounding, lighting circuits and controls, facility and electrical service, and power distribution.
  • Prepare data visualizations such as tables, charts, reports, sketches, calculations, and illustrations.
  • Maintain quality control standards and procedures for accurate measurements and reporting.
  • Work as part of a cross‑functional team to execute project work, layout installations, calculate material/equipment/labor costs, and ensure compliance with specifications, permits, regulatory and technical analysis memos.
  • Assist with development and scoping of small‑to‑medium projects.
  • Prepare technical reports and presentations that explain research and findings to improve design and electrical engineering issues.
  • Conduct engineering studies and surveys to gain further information on design and construction problems or future needs.
  • Analyze, evaluate, and interpret field data to develop action plans for risk mitigation.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision‑making in accordance with WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent experience.
  • 3‑5 years of relevant post‑education experience designing power transmission and distribution systems in utility or industrial/commercial environments.
  • Exposure to operations and project controls reporting.
  • Knowledge of electrical engineering principles, practices, process, design/build, permitting, and project work‑related issues.
  • Experience with infrastructure planning, design and construction management, including rehabilitation and new design.
  • Ability to coordinate with agency regulators and understand requirements.
  • Knowledge of engineering and electrical construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record‑keeping requirements.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills for interacting with engineering and non‑engineering audiences.
  • Self‑leadership, attention to detail, results orientation, and ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic work environment.
  • Ability to learn new techniques, perform multiple tasks simultaneously, follow instruction, work independently, and comply with company policies.
  • Moderate proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, technology, math principles, predictive models, spreadsheets and tools.
  • Experience with discipline‑specific design software such as CADD, Aspen, CAPE, ETAP, AutoCADD electrical.
