The Department of Marine Resources is seeking to fill a limited period vacancy for a Marine Resource Scientist II out of their West Boothbay Harbor headquarters.

Brief

Job Description

This position serves as the lead hydrographer for the Maine Coastal Mapping Initiative (MCMI). MCMI acquires seafloor and marine habitat information including bathymetry and back scatter data, sediment information, benthic community data, and water column profiles. MCMI data support marine planning, management, and development of marine resources for the State of Maine. This position requires excellent communication skills and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

Tasks and Responsibilities
  • Lead a major research project requiring considerable initiative
  • Design multibeam seafloor surveys to fill bathymetric data gaps and support agency and partner research needs
  • Deploy, maintain, and troubleshoot survey equipment
  • Conduct field acquisition of bathymetric and back scatter data using Kongsberg EM2042 on contracted survey vessels
  • Collect and process multibeam data using QINSy and Qimera
  • Perform data processing, QA/QC, statistical validation, and data visualization to meet NOAA Office of Coast Survey bathymetry standards
  • Write federally required reports necessary to update nautical charts
  • Package and submit reports and data to federal portals, including NOAA’s National Center for Environmental Information
  • Maintain and update data collection and survey equipment maintenance protocols
  • Supervise a Marine Resource Scientist I position, train and work alongside seasonal contracted employees on vessels and in the laboratory
  • Lead the writing of technical reports and scientific publications in collaboration with the MCMI program lead.
  • Assist with public dissemination of program results through presentations and outreach
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required
  • Experience deploying, operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting multibeam sonar systems
  • Experience with sonar acquisition, survey planning, and data processing routines
  • Knowledge of acoustic theory and hydrography
  • Project design and project management related to hydrographic surveys
  • Spatial and statistical analysis experience and knowledge
  • Demonstrated skill with MS Office products, ArcGIS, R/Python, and QPS software

Minimum Qualifications

Intermediary education, training, or experience in a scientific, technical, engineering field, or a related field with demonstrated experience in the field of marine resource research and/or management or another related field. Previous experience in a supervisory capacity is preferred.
