About the role
As a Solid Waste Engineer/Project Manager
, you will report to a firm principal and contribute to a diverse portfolio of projects for commercial, municipal, and industrial solid waste clients across Maine and the northeastern United States. You will collaborate closely with SME’s multidisciplinary staff and regularly interact with clients, regulatory agencies, and the public, making strong interpersonal and communication skills essential.
This role is based in Cumberland, Maine.
This role offers an exceptional opportunity to work on a wide range of solid waste management and civil engineering projects. At SME, we take pride in building and maintaining positive, long‑term relationships with all stakeholders.
Responsibilities- Manage projects from concept through completion, ensuring schedule and budget goals are met
- Perform engineering and design work, including site grading, stormwater management, geosynthetics, and pump and piping systems
- Prepare technical reports, specifications, and permit applications
- Provide construction engineering inspection and documentation services
- Support engineering tasks for the Cumberland, Maine, office
- Maintain strong organizational skills to keep tasks on schedule
- Collaborate as an integral team member and problem solver, developing practical, cost‑effective solutions for clients
- B.S. in Environmental or Civil Engineering with 10+ years of relevant experience
- Professional Engineer (PE) license, or willingness to obtain within one year
- Experience in project management and construction contract administration
- Proficiency in engineering design, technical reporting, and specifications
- Skilled with Microsoft Office Suite and AutoCAD
- Experience with local, state, and federal permitting
- Strong oral and written communication skills
