Joining the Customs and Border Protection Office of Field Operations will allow you to use your expertise to manage one or more national programs in order to help to detect and prevent terrorists and instruments of terror from entering or exiting the U.S. Apply for this exciting opportunity to direct programs that strengthen the Department's ability to perform homeland security.
This position starts at a salary of $ (GS-13, Step
1) to $ (GS-13, Step 10).
In this second-line supervisory position you will become a key member of a team of homeland security professionals enforcing applicable laws and facilitating the orderly and efficient flow of international trade and travel. Typical work assignments include:
- Interpreting and applying laws, rules and regulations of over forty Federal agencies and using decision‑making skills to make complex decisions related to the inspection of travelers and shipments and to identify those requiring further scrutiny, especially those involving terrorist individuals and instruments of terror.
- Directing the work activities in the areas of prearrival risk assessments, primary inspections, secondary inspections (including dispositions for enforcement and compliance), investigations, and intelligence collection and analysis in both the inbound and outbound operational environments.
- Providing technical advice on the admissibility of travelers; import/export of cargo, merchandise and articles accompanying persons; international mail compliance; arrival/departure of vessels, aircraft and vehicles involved in international trade; and/or anti‑smuggling and terrorist activities, including the apprehension and detention of those suspected of violating such laws and regulations.
- Managing other supervisors overseeing all operational, support and administrative functions at the port of entry including CBP Officers, CBP Agriculture Specialists, CBP Technicians and other support staff.
To qualify for the GS‑13 grade level you must possess at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level, performing duties such as:
- Conducting primary inspections of cargo, conveyances and travelers to determine admissibility, alienage, citizenship and the need for referral to secondary inspection for further intensified inspection at Ports of Entry (POE).
- Conducting secondary inspections of referrals from primary inspections through interviews, additional database queries, communication with other law enforcement agencies, and use of technology at the POE.
- Identifying, targeting, controlling and examining passengers and cargo leaving the United States to ensure the mission objectives of interdicting terrorists and instruments of terror, and compliance with export requirements.
- Developing, planning and participating in tactical operations and preparing detailed accurate reports regarding inspections, gathered intelligence and incidents.
- Communicating and interacting with internal components, other law enforcement agencies, foreign entities and carriers.
- Serving as a coach and mentor of lower level CBP Officers and providing evaluation or feedback to supervisors and/or CBP Officers on performance improvement and training needs.
- You must be a U.S. Citizen.
- Males born after 12/31/1959 must be registered with Selective Service.
- Primary U.S. residency for at least three of the last five years.
- All pre‑employment processes will be conducted in English.
- You may be required to pass a background investigation and/or polygraph.
- CBP follows the DHS Drug‑Free Workplace Plan for drug testing procedures.
- You must have a passing Total Score on the required CBP Officer Promotional Assessment component.
- Firearm Requirement – you must meet initial and continuing qualifications in the use of firearms as outlined in the Gun Control Act of 1968, amended by the Lautenberg Amendment of 1996. Certain criminal records or other disqualifying conditions (e.g., outstanding warrants, unlawful substance use, mental institutionalization, etc.) make you ineligible.
