Phlebotomist Representative I - Hospital

Dover Foxcroft, ME | Monday to Friday, varying 6:00 AM to 6:30 PM, with rotational weekends | Hospital-based position at Northern Lights Hospital.

Job Responsibilities
  • Perform venipuncture and capillary blood collection on patients of all age groups.
  • Accurately label and process specimens according to laboratory protocol.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of phlebotomy carts and work areas.
  • Administer oral solutions such as Glucola according to established training.
  • Data entry and specimen processing including labeling, centrifuging, splitting, and freezing as required by test order.
  • Perform departmental clerical duties when assigned, such as data entry, inventory, stock supplies, and answering phones.
  • Read, understand and comply with departmental policies, protocols and procedures (Procedure Manuals, Safety Manual, Compliance Manual, Employee Handbook, Quality Assurance Manual) and ensure all staff follow instructions.
  • Observe infection control and safety protocols at all times.
  • Maintain phlebotomy logs, including maintenance and temperature logs, in a timely manner.
  • Complete all required data entry tasks accurately, including patient registration, test order entry from requisition or database, and standing order management.
  • Maintain neat, clean facilities and report required repairs and maintenance to the Group Leader or Supervisor.
  • Complete training courses and keep up to date with the latest phlebotomy techniques.
  • Communicate effectively with patients, nursing staff, and lab personnel.
  • Participate in special projects and teams.
  • Rotate through inpatient, outpatient, physicians' offices, and ED settings as scheduled.
  • Assist with training of new staff or students as needed.
  • Stay up to date on company communications.
  • Perform additional duties and responsibilities as needed.
Qualifications

Required

Work Experience:

  • Proficient phlebotomy skills, including pediatric, geriatric, and capillary collections.
  • Flexible and available based on staffing needs, including weekends, holidays, on‑call, and overtime.
  • Valid driver's license, clean driving record, and reliable transportation if applicable.

Preferred

Work Experience:

  • One year of phlebotomy experience.
  • Customer service and healthcare experience.
  • Keyboard/data entry experience.
  • Hospital phlebotomists may support pre‑analytical laboratory functions.

Physical and Mental Requirements:

  • Lift light to moderately heavy objects (1–15 lbs frequently; 16–25 lbs occasionally; >41 lbs without assistance).
  • Ability to sit, stand, and walk for long periods and perform repetitive tasks with the dominant hand.
  • Use stairs and/or elevators between floors.
  • Travel may be required.
  • Extensive use of phone and PC.
  • Fine dexterity and steadiness of hands.
  • Positional coordination (balancing, bending/kneeling, pushing/pulling, reaching/twisting).

Knowledge:

  • Commitment to Quest Diagnostics & Hospital System policies and procedures, dress code, employee health & safety, and Everyday Excellence Guiding Principles.
  • Effective communication in English, both verbally and in writing.

Skills:

  • Deliver quality, error‑free work in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent phlebotomy skills, including pediatric and geriatric.
  • Superior customer focus, positive interactions, transparent communication with peers, supervisors and patients, embrace change, and business knowledge.

Work Environment:

  • Hospital environment.
  • Exposure to varied patient temperament and graphic traumas.
  • English required.

Education:

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent (required).

Preferred Technical Training or Professional Licensing:

  • Phlebotomy certification (required in certain states, e.g., California, Nevada, Washington, Louisiana).
