The Coveside Market Manager
The Coveside Market is part of the historic Colony Hotel, a Kennebunkport landmark. The Market opened in 2023 and is open 7 days a week, year round. The Market serves as a retail hub for the hotel and the community.
The Coveside Market Manager position is full time, year-round, with competitive salary and benefits.
The Manager position is dynamic and customer-focused. It revolves around being a good leader and a team player to lead the operations within the Market and its Cafe component. The Market Manager will work closely with the hotel kitchen team to ensure a seamless operation between both departments. The manager will also work with hotel management to ensure cohesion between the Market, its staff, and the Hotel.
The manager should be passionate about coffee, customer service, being a leader, and creating memorable guest experiences in a resort environment.
- Oversee the daily operations of the Market/Cafe, including staff management, task delegation, product quality, customer satisfaction, closing/opening, cleanliness, and maintaining a smooth workflow throughout the day.
- Coordinate with the hotel kitchen to provide guest feedback, keep the menu fresh with new items, and adjust inventory levels as needed while business volume fluctuates. The Kitchen-made food items are to be ordered from the kitchen daily and received the next day.
- Manage inventory for coffee, ingredients, supplies, and all retail products.
- Ensure proper inventory levels when ordering all the products/supplies, and manage vendor relationships while doing so.
- Ensure all equipment is maintained and functioning properly, troubleshooting and ordering repairs as needed.
- Report to and meet with hotel management to ensure proper coordination with general hotel operations, and to keep everyone updated with market/cafe operations.
- Seek out new brands and vendors to keep retail selection of products fresh and exciting.
- Maintain a fully stocked, presentable sales floor, utilizing merchandising practices and skills.
- Hire, train, schedule, and lead a team of baristas and support staff, fostering a positive work environment.
- Properly allocate responsibilities and tasks to the supervisor and team of staff.
- Create staff schedules and ensure adequate coverage during peak hours. Coordinate with the front desk to ensure staffing is appropriately aligned with hotel occupancy.
- Ensure clear communication to staff in regards to expectations, hotel updates, and general operational tasks.
- Greet and engage with guests, ensuring an exceptional coffee shop experience.
- Resolve customer complaints and concerns in a professional and timely manner.
- Oversee the preparation and serving of beverages and food, ensuring adherence to health and safety standards.
- Assist with the creation of promotional events, menus, and seasonal offerings to attract guests and increase sales.
- Provide ongoing coaching and feedback to maintain a high standard of customer service and team productivity.
- Monitor daily sales, manage and track coffee shop profitability.
- Assist with budgeting and cost control initiatives to maintain profitability while ensuring quality service and products.
- Provide accounting with various reports to assist with financial tracking.
- Properly order products to keep the cost of goods sold within budget, while avoiding an inadequate supply of products and food items.
- Schedule staff and control payroll to stay within budget, while always having appropriate staffing for current business volume.
- Ability to manage and lead a team, providing strong leadership, training, and guidance.
- Exceptional customer service and communication skills.
- Basic knowledge of inventory management, cost control, ordering, scheduling, and general hospitality management.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while maintaining attention to detail.
- Flexibility to work various shifts, including weekends and holidays.
- High school diploma or equivalent required; additional certifications in hospitality or management a plus.
- Experience working in a hotel or resort environment.
- Knowledge of food safety and sanitation practices.
- Previous management experience, preferably in hotel or resort operations.
- Ability to lift 30-40 pounds and stand for extended periods of time.
