DeepL's Legal team seeking a Legal Counsel to join their Privacy and Regulatory Compliance team within the growing Legal department. As a Legal Counsel at DeepL, you will work closely with the Legal Technology team and the wider legal team as well as the Product and Tech teams to provide critical support and assistance across a range of regulatory matters and data protection.
Responsibilities- Monitoring and together with the Lead and Senior Legal Counsel advise the business on implications of new and evolving regulatory obligations beyond core privacy topics, such as those related to AI regulation, digital services regulations and cybersecurity and e-commerce laws.
- Monitoring and advising on the implementation of new and existing regulatory requirements affecting our products and other processing activities relevant for the business.
- Working closely with our GtM and Governmental Affairs teams, i.e. responding to consultations, reviewing legal documents, in particular vendor data processing agreements (DPAs) and supporting in complex deals involving data use and sharing.
- Developing internal memos and training materials relating to regulatory requirements and data protection for employees. Conducting LIAs and DPIAs.
- Supporting the team in responding to data subject requests, including data subject access requests (DSARs).
- Administrative tasks such as organizing and maintaining documents and overseeing deadlines for multiple tasks and assisting in audits as required.
- Fully qualified lawyer (e.g. at least first German State Exam or qualified in England and Wales) and at least two years of relevant experience working inhouse in internal legal departments (preferably in a tech company).
- Strong interest in regulatory affairs, data protection and AI topics.
- Familiarity with AI Regulation and GDPR and other regulatory fields relevant for tech industry. Knowledge with horizon scanning is desirable.
- Strong analytical, research and organizational skills with a structured way of working and considerable attention to detail, especially under time pressure.
- Desirable if you have first experience with using AI tools and systems to improve the efficiency and throughput of legal support.
- Good time management skills and ability to prioritise as well as quickly adapting to changing priorities.
- You are a collaborative individual with a proactive style of working and willing to work in a highly demanding, fast-changing environment.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
