Position Summary

Wolfe's Neck Center is seeking a Seasonal Volunteer & Gardens Coordinator to oversee and maintain garden spaces while coordinating volunteer projects that support our mission. This role manages daily garden operations, leads and supports volunteers, and fosters a welcoming, inclusive, and productive volunteer environment. The Coordinator serves as a bridge between the Stewardship team, volunteers, and organizational goals, ensuring garden spaces are well maintained, accessible, and aligned with sustainable practices.

This is a Seasonal position that runs from approximately April 1 - November 1.

Responsibilities Volunteer Management
  • Recruit, train, schedule, and support volunteers for garden and landscape projects
  • Coordinate daily and weekly volunteer workdays and special project days
  • Delegate tasks effectively based on skill level and project needs
  • Maintain volunteer records, track hours, and assist with reporting
  • Plan and support volunteer appreciation and recognition activities
Garden Operations & Maintenance
  • Oversee daily maintenance of garden spaces around the Little River campus and at specified seasonal beds throughout the WNC property, including beds, paths, and common areas
  • Implement seasonal maintenance and planting plans, prioritizing native plants that enhance biodiversity and create pollinator habitat to the greatest extent possible
  • Manage garden plots and shared spaces in alignment with established guidelines
  • Ensure availability and proper use of resources such as soil, compost, water, tools, and supplies
  • Ensure gardens comply with safety, sustainability, and organizational policies
Communication
  • Maintain clear, consistent communication with volunteers and staff via email, phone, signage, and in-person interactions
  • Share schedules, updates, and expectations in a timely manner
  • Address questions, concerns, and conflicts professionally and constructively
Reporting & Administration
  • Track volunteer participation, hours, and project outcomes
  • Assist with documentation related to donations or supplies when applicable
  • Provide regular updates and reports to supervisors
Qualifications
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated passion for gardening and community engagement
  • Experience working with or leading volunteers
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and perform physical labor (lifting, bending, standing for extended periods)
  • Strong problem-solving, leadership, and project management skills
  • Familiarity with regenerative agriculture, gardening practices, and environmental stewardship
  • Comfort using basic technology and software such as Google Suite
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with a team
Compensation

The Volunteer and Gardens Coordinator is a seasonal position based at Wolfe's Neck Center in Freeport, ME from approximately April 1 - Nov 1. Compensation commensurate with experience: $18 an hour.
