Description:
Current Maine nursing license preferred. Ability to problem solve and utilize critical thinking skills. Effective verbal and written communication skills are essential. Knowledge base includes nursing assessment and skills for all age groups. Requires standing, walking, sitting, kneeling, stooping, crouching, bending, reaching, balance, and lifting. Must be able to push patients in wheelchairs and stretchers and lift up to 30 lbs.
Visual and hearing acuity sufficient to assess patients is necessary. Exposure to infectious diseases, blood-borne pathogens, toxic cleaning chemicals, and fumes is possible. Performs initial age-appropriate nursing assessments. Completes ongoing age-appropriate reassessments. Completes discharge assessments to identify patient discharge needs. Identifies priorities for delivering nursing care. Develops and implements a plan of care based on patient needs and physician orders.
Executes appropriate nursing actions to reach patient goals. Communicates patient care activities to healthcare team members. Updates healthcare team members on current status and any changes in plan. Documents patient care activities per established standards and policies. Initiates specialty/supplemental nursing notes as appropriate. Assists with patient charges. Delivers patient care per established policies and within the scope of the state Nursing Practice Act.
Maintains a physical environment that promotes patient and staff safety and wellness. Ensures that supplies and equipment are readily available and in safe working order. Reports situations involving questionable safety or legality promptly. Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to implement procedures in the event of internal or external disasters. Demonstrates knowledge of drug administration and effects. Utilizes appropriate drug reference sources for drug information.
Administers drugs correctly utilizing the five rights. Evaluates patient responses to medications. Assesses the need for patient or family education and provides teaching as indicated. Completes discharge plans and ensures patient and family understanding. Performs follow-up calls to patients. Assesses nursing care throughout the shift. Participates in multidisciplinary team meetings and bedside rounding with case managers. Promotes professional behavior and hospital standards.
Actively participates in quality improvement initiatives and reports quality issues. Participates in emergency and disaster preparedness planning and drills as requested. Expected to respond to real-life disaster or emergency events, within the scope of professional abilities. Facility reserves the right to cancel up to 3 shifts within 12 weeks.
