AI for Multimodal Biology and Microscopy

The Computational Microscopy for Cell Biology (CMCB) laboratory, led by Assistant Prof. Juliette Griffié, is recruiting a highly motivated PhD student to develop next-generation machine learning and generative AI approaches for multimodal biological data integration.

The proposed project focuses on developing AI strategies for integrating complex biological datasets, with a particular emphasis on combining advanced light microscopy and sequencing-based approaches. The research will explore how multimodal representation learning and generative AI can be leveraged to uncover fundamental biological mechanisms from large-scale and heterogeneous datasets. This PhD project sits at the intersection of artificial intelligence, computational biology, and quantitative microscopy, and is designed for candidates excited about applying advanced AI methods to frontier problems in biology.

We are seeking exceptional candidates with a strong quantitative background and an MSc degree in computer science, physics, mathematics, engineering, bioinformatics, or related disciplines. Applicants should have solid experience in machine learning and scientific programming. Experience with deep learning and generative AI is highly desirable. A genuine interest in biology and interdisciplinary research is essential.

The selected candidate will join an interdisciplinary and dynamic research environment composed primarily of physicists, engineers, biochemists and computational scientists. The CMCB laboratory develops cutting-edge computational and AI-driven approaches for extracting biological insight from microscopy and multimodal datasets. Current research directions in the lab include reinforcement learning for drug design, interpretable AI pipelines to study cancer and autoimmunity as well as generative and graph neural network approaches for biological imaging.

The lab is located at Sci Life Lab  in Stockholm (Campus Solna), one of Europe's leading centers for data-driven life science and biomedical research. Sci Life Lab  provides a uniquely collaborative and international environment at the interface of AI, technology, and life sciences, with access to world-class infrastructure, interdisciplinary collaborations, and advanced experimental platforms.
