Maine/New Hampshire Inshore Trawl Survey Chief Scientist

This position oversees the organization, planning, execution, and data analysis of the Maine/New Hampshire Inshore Trawl Survey, a long-term fisheries-independent survey that provides critical baseline data for many biological assessments along the coast of Maine, including: lobster, halibut, shrimp, scallop, herring and groundfish. As the survey's Chief Scientist, this position participates in and is responsible for coordinating all aspects of the survey from planning to data analysis for stock assessments or scientific research.

This work involves obtaining yearly permits, analyzing biological and environmental data to write reports and publications, developing abundance and biomass indices, providing input on management recommendations, overseeing vessel contracts, and supervising a team of scientists and specialists for the survey. In addition to overseeing the MENH survey this position will also plan, design, and conduct research to inform management of marine resources in the State of Maine.

This position also oversees Maine's offshore wind research array seasonal bottom trawl survey project and staff. Additionally, this position will represent the Department on state, interstate, and federal management committees. This is a supervisory position responsible for recruiting staff, evaluating, and coaching staff performance, and advising the Division Director on personnel concerns and issues.

Preference will be given to candidates who have the following skills:

• Knowledge of stock assessment and population dynamics
• Knowledge of fishery survey design and sampling methods with preference given to those who have worked on fishery-independent surveys.
• Experience conducting marine science research and advanced statistical analysis and scientific writing in peer-reviewed literature.
• Expertise in R and GIS
• Experience collaborating with the commercial fishing industry for marine science research.
• Ability to work at sea during adverse weather conditions.
• Ability to initiate, organize, supervise, and implement research and special projects and see through to completion as directed and in accordance with Department goals and objectives.

Minimum qualifications include a Bachelors Degree in a scientific, technical, or engineering field and four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in the field of marine resource research and management or related field, including experience in a supervisory capacity. Equivalent experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.

Salary: $58,801.60-$79,851.20/Annually
