Maine/New Hampshire Inshore Trawl Survey Lead Scientist

This position is responsible for ensuring the organization, planning, completion, and data analysis of the Maine/New Hampshire Inshore Trawl Survey that serves as critical baseline information for many biological assessments along the coast of Maine that includes lobster, halibut, shrimp, scallop, herring and groundfish. This position plans and implements all logistics surrounding the surveys. As the lead scientist for the survey, this position is responsible for public and industry outreach, recruiting and supervising staff to do surveys and other data gathering;

planning, directing, and overseeing the work of professional scientists to monitor progress toward research goals and evaluating work performance. The work involves analyzing biological and environmental data to write reports and develop abundance and biomass indices, publications; making recommendations; overseeing the execution of contract requirements; monitoring work and detecting deficiencies to ensure work is performance in accordance with specification. Additionally, this position will represent the department at state, interstate, and federal management committees.

This is a supervisory position responsible for evaluating and coaching the performance of subordinates and advising the Division Director on personnel concerns and issues.

The position requires considerable initiative to support staff to include subordinate scientists who may serve as a single research study leader. Applicants should demonstrate experience with marine science research, fisheries biology, statistical analyses, spatial analyses, and scientific writing in peer-reviewed literature. Desired skills include knowledge of migration and movement patterns of marine life; knowledge of marine resources management techniques; knowledge of stock assessments;

expertise in R and GIS is preferred; knowledge of state and federal laws, rules, and regulations relating to marine resources conservation, as well as knowledge of fishing practices and techniques for commercially harvested species. Must have the ability work at sea during adverse weather, ability to conduct advanced statistical analyses of marine resource research data; ability to initiate, organize, supervise, and implement research and special projects and see through to completion as directed and in accordance with Department goals and objectives.

Supervision is exercised over a staff of professional and technical personnel. Work is performed under limited supervision.

Minimum Qualifications:

A Bachelor's Degree in a scientific, technical, or engineering field and four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in the field of marine resource research and management or related field, including experience in a supervisory capacity. Equivalent experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.

Salary: $55,473.60 – $75,337.60
