The OSP Line Maintenance & Construction II performs the general labor associated with outside plant line maintenance. You will operate construction equipment including trenchers, backhoes, end loaders and plows in order to place cable facilities. You will install, test, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair aerial and underground cable facilities within TDS Telecom serving areas. Work will be performed in accordance with state and local regulations in a safe manner.
Note:
Due to in‑field support and on‑call requirements, the individual selected will be required to reside within a 60‑minute driving distance from the North Anson, Maine warehouse located at 2 Elm Street - North Anson, Maine 04958.
Position is eligible for a $1,000 sign‑on bonus (payout terms apply).
Candidate may be hired at either OSP Line Maintenance & Construction I (requisition #) or II (requisition #) depending on skills and qualifications. Please reference each posting for minimum qualifications required and submit an application for each level you are interested and qualified for.
Responsibilities- Perform general line maintenance in various weather conditions while following safety fundamentals.
- Complete fallen tree removals from aerial plant, including right of way tree trimming as needed.
- Complete DSA structure support repairs (wooden, metal decking).
- Replace broken, set new, and realign poles as needed – including reattaching all cables.
- Perform pole transfers per designated work order requests.
- Perform all necessary line repairs – strand, lashing wire, guy wires, anchor placement, proper slack placement, etc.
- Operate construction and other excavating equipment to construct, maintain, and repair outside plant cable facilities.
- Maintain, repair, and place new (copper, fiber, coax) aerial and buried cable according to maps, staking sheets, and locate markings.
- Review and update GIS, maps, addresses, as‑builds.
- Set peds, vaults, and handholes along with marking/labeling fiber optic, copper/coax facilities.
- Install, troubleshoot, test, splice, repair, and maintain fiber optic/copper/coax facilities.
- Identify location of defective cable using various test equipment and repair buried, aerial, underground, and/or customer cable.
- Locate cable and fiber in response to customer requests and/or construction needs.
- Perform cable fault acceptance tests on newly constructed facilities.
- Ensure worksite and landscape is fully restored after project completion.
- Proficiency in operating all test equipment associated with outside plant facilities.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Train and monitor personnel as directed by supervisor or team lead.

Required Qualifications- 1+ years of construction experience using equipment such as trenchers, plows, and backhoes – or current military service, or prior military service with honorable discharge.
- 1+ years of telecommunications outside plant experience.
- Follow TDS attendance guidelines.
- Maintain a valid driver's license and meet DOT requirements.
- Understanding of telecommunication products and services.
- Ability to obtain a Class A CDL; current CDL preferred at hire; training will be provided if eligible.
- Pass all components of the Safety Training course curriculum upon hire.
- Pass customer‑specific requirements, which may include a background check.
- Proven organizational skills and ability to multi‑task.
- Physical requirements may vary; ability to dig, lift, and climb.
- Availability for on‑call/standby responsibilities and occasional travel.
