Mason/Carpenter/Maintenance

Reports To:

Facilities Manager

FLSA Status:

Non-Exempt

SUMMARY:

Employee will perform hands-on masonry and concrete construction (builds and repairs structures such as walls, walkways, and chimneys using brick, stone, concrete block, or natural and artificial stone) at various locations in Central Maine, as directed by the Facilities Manager. Always works in a safe and efficient manner, following all safety procedures.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Measure height, width, length, and other proportions. Select/source materials.
  • Work with blueprints or instructions from supervisors.
  • Utilize hand and power tools. Work off ladders, staging, and man lifts
  • Mix mortar, grout, and concrete to the correct consistency by hand or using mechanical mixers.
  • Transport bricks, blocks, stones, and other heavy supplies to work areas and scaffolding.
  • Build, move, and dismantle scaffolding, and set up safety barriers or basic forms.
  • Cut or break bricks, concrete blocks, and tiles to required dimensions using hand tools or masonry saws
  • Remove debris, scrap materials, and excess mortar from tools, work surfaces, and the overall job site.
EDUCATION and/or

EXPERIENCE:

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); two to four years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Must have valid driver’s license.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Previous masonry and concrete construction experience required.
  • Experience with concrete forming, pouring, and finishing.
  • Knowledge of masonry techniques and materials.
  • Ability to read basic construction plans and measurements.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work outdoors in varying conditions.
  • Reliable transportation and dependable attendance.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
  • OSHA or other construction certifications are a plus.
LANGUAGE

SKILLS:

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.

MATHEMATICAL

SKILLS:

Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide. Ability to perform these operations using units of weight measurement and volume.

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to walk, stand, bend, squat, use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms up to 90% of the time and talk or hear.

The employee can be required to lift and/or move up to 20 pounds for up to 80% of the time and lift and/or move up to 75 pounds 20 % of the time. Anything over 40 pounds it is recommended to use a team lift or mechanical assistance if possible. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The employee may from time to time be exposed to dust, mildew, mold and smoke damaged merchandise.
