Position Summary

Instruct athletes in the fundamental skills, strategy, and physical training necessary for individual and team success; serve as an assistant to the Varsity Head Coach.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Maintain thorough knowledge of all local and state athletic policies and implement them as required.
  • Attend all required meetings as set by the school and MPA.
  • Emphasize academics, sportsmanship, and citizenship as part of the athletic philosophy.
  • Maintain high standards for athlete performance and conduct; model appropriate standards of conduct through personal behavior.
  • Dress appropriately at practices and competitions.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the sport and apply effective training and conditioning techniques.
  • Seek opportunities to learn and implement new techniques and ideas.
  • Teach skills that are appropriate and safe for individual athletes.
  • Supervise athletes at all times.
  • Maintain, inventory, properly store, and care for equipment; inspect equipment and facilities for safety.
  • Assist with preparation for scheduled practices and events.
  • Create and enforce appropriate team rules.
  • Use appropriate emergency and injury response skills.
  • Encourage athlete leadership on and off the field.
  • Communicate with parents promptly and appropriately; participate in pre‑season informational meetings with parents and athletes.
  • Interact with game officials effectively and professionally.
  • Model excellent sportsmanship at all times.
  • Meet deadlines for paperwork and related duties; maintain required athlete records and documentation.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Head Coach, Athletic Director, or Principal.
Qualifications
  • Knowledge and background in the sport.
  • Meets RSU 57 eligibility requirements, including:
  • First Aid Training
  • CPR Training
  • Concussion Management Course
  • Heat Illness & Acclimatization Course
  • Fundamentals of Coaching Course
  • Sudden Cardiac Arrest Course
  • Protecting Students from Abuse Course
  • Student Mental Health Course
  • RSU 57 Background Check
  • Maine Department of Education Criminal History Record Check

Requirements must be met when specified.

Language and Communication Skills
  • Ability to read and interpret documents relevant to the position, including athletic policy manuals, handbooks, and state guidelines.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, concisely, and correctly in speech and writing with parents, coaches, and athletes.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with administrators, athletes, coaching staff, and the community.
Mathematical Skills
  • Understanding of budgeting and basic accounting practices.
Physical Demands

While performing the essential duties of the position, the employee is continuously required to stand, walk, talk, and hear. The employee will frequently demonstrate coaching techniques requiring physical activity, including running, jumping, throwing, catching, swinging implements, and general body movement. The employee may be required to lift and carry items weighing more than 20 pounds. The position may involve extended periods of sitting, frequent travel by bus, and extended work hours to meet job demands.

  • Noise levels are usually moderate but may occasionally be excessive.
  • Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
