Under the direct supervision of the Assistant Directors (K–8) and in accordance with the policies established by the Board of Trustees, the Reading Specialist oversees Mystic Valley Regional Charter School’s Reading Intervention Program.

The Reading Specialist works directly with students, primarily in Grades K–6 and may also support students through Grade 8. The role focuses on identifying and addressing deficiencies in reading and language acquisition among students who are performing below grade level or are otherwise at risk academically.

Using both internal and external assessment data, the Reading Specialist identifies students in need of intervention, develops targeted instructional strategies, and implements evidence-based programs designed to accelerate literacy growth and help students achieve grade‑level proficiency. This is an eleven‑month position.

Key Responsibilities
  • Identify students in need of reading and language intervention through analysis of assessment data and teacher referrals.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for families regarding enrollment and participation in the Reading Intervention Program.
  • Deliver targeted small‑group and individual reading interventions to students throughout the school day, according to an annual schedule established by August 15.
  • Provide intervention services to newly identified students and students who enroll during the school year.
  • Collaborate with fellow Reading Specialists, classroom teachers, and school leadership to ensure instructional consistency and student success.
  • Implement approved intervention programs with fidelity, including Direct Instruction (DI) programs whenever appropriate.
  • Maintain alignment with the school's Core Knowledge curriculum and approved literacy programs.
  • Refrain from introducing new curricula or instructional programs without prior review and approval through established school procedures.
  • Monitor student progress and adjust intervention strategies based on performance data.
  • Prepare and distribute quarterly progress reports to families of students receiving intervention services.
  • Participate in parent‑teacher conferences and other family engagement activities as needed.
  • Maintain accurate records of student performance, interventions, and program outcomes.
  • Perform additional duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Assistant Directors.
Qualifications

  • Excellent organizational, planning, and time‑management skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication abilities.
  • Demonstrated problem‑solving and analytical skills.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with teachers, administrators, students, and families.
  • Flexible, adaptable, and committed to continuous improvement.
