Job Description

Overview of the Malden Public Schools: The Malden Public Schools (MPS) is a richly diverse district located in the Greater Boston area and accessible by the MBTA Orange Line. Its student body comprises approximately 6,500 students from 59 countries who speak 67 languages. MPS operates one early learning center, five K‑8 schools, and one high school. Responsibilities
  • Interview and verify qualifications of all permanent and per diem nursing applicants.
  • Hire and orient qualified nursing staff.
  • Assign, supervise, and evaluate all nursing staff.
  • Participate in the school health wellness committee(s).
  • Serve as a member of the District Leadership team.
  • Lead development of program goals and objectives.
  • Review changing health trends to revise goals and objectives.
  • Coordinate collection of statistical information to meet reporting requirements of the school system and state agencies.
  • Collaborate with administrators, teachers, and support staff to promote a physically and psychologically healthy school environment.
  • Represent the School’s Nursing Services at community meetings and coalitions related to health and nursing services.
  • Collaborate with School Physicians to coordinate nursing services in school and community.
  • Coordinate professional development for nursing staff.
  • Collaborate with administration on annual nursing budget.
  • Collaborate with local schools of nursing to provide student nurses with clinical internships in community health.
  • Provide support to nursing staff in developing and implementing policy and procedures such as:
  • Documentation systems
  • Immunization and/or physical examinations
  • Medication administration
  • Emergency planning
  • Communicable disease prevention and infection control
  • Mandatory screening
  • Liaison to the Welcome Center; oversee medical clearance of all students for initial enrollment into MPS.
  • Coordinate and consult on medically challenging students.
  • Order medical supplies and deliver them.
  • Coordinate AED program.
  • Verify all medical equipment is calibrated, maintained, and updated.
  • Coordinate staffing—obtain substitutes when needed and cover a school if no substitute is available.
  • Work with administration to provide nurses for summer programs.
  • Provide staff with updates from the Department of Public Health, changes in rules and regulations.
  • Ensure all staff maintain licensure and certifications.
  • Work with the Department of Public Health and coordinate the Waiver Program for medication administration by unlicensed personnel for field trips and epi‑pens for allergies.
  • Work closely with the Malden Board of Health for immunizations and TB, and with community health providers.
  • Perform other general duties as indicated by the Superintendent of Schools or their designee, and policies of the Malden School Committee.
Qualifications
  • Licensed by DESE as a Director.
  • Licensed by DESE as a School Nurse.
  • Master’s degree in Nursing or related field.
  • Valid Nursing license to practice in Massachusetts.
  • Minimum 3 years experience in school nursing.
  • Maintain certification in CPR (Cardio‑Pulmonary Resuscitation).
  • Strong computer skills.
  • Ability to provide leadership in health services and related fields.
  • Able to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to give oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to plan, administer, direct, and coordinate programs and functions of all the school nurses and the program.
  • Ability to make sound decisions and recommendations on matters of major policy, complex administrative, and technical problems.
