Job Overview
Under general supervision, the Assistant Engineer performs entry-level professional civil engineering work in support of public works, transportation, land development, environmental, and infrastructure projects within Mono County. The position assists with engineering analysis, project management, field inspections, plan review, grant administration, and preparation of technical documents related to public and private development projects.
Responsibilities may include assisting with construction administration, reviewing development plans and permits, conducting engineering calculations and research, supporting traffic and environmental studies, preparing cost estimates and specifications, collecting field data, and coordinating with developers, consultants, contractors, and regulatory agencies. The Assistant Engineer also supports grant-funded projects, County standards development, and infrastructure planning efforts while gaining practical experience in public sector engineering operations.

The ideal candidate communicates effectively with colleagues, contractors, developers, consultants, and members of the public, and is committed to providing excellent customer service while supporting safe, sustainable, and efficient public infrastructure. Candidates should be comfortable working in both office and outdoor environments, managing multiple assignments, and learning new technologies and regulatory processes. Experience or familiarity with AutoCAD or Civil3D, public project management, CEQA/NEPA processes, grant administration, surveying, traffic studies, and development review is highly desirable.
Candidates pursuing or possessing an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification and who demonstrate initiative, professionalism, and strong problem-solving abilities are encouraged to apply.

- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a related field from an accredited college or university and a FE/EIT certificate, or
- Equivalent work experience in civil engineering and possession of a FE/EIT certificate.
