SALARY:
Teacher Scale - 200 Days

HOURS: 7.5 hours per day

POSITION LENGTH: 200 Days

Exempt

IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR(S):
Building Principals

JOB SUMMARY:

The Middle School Science Teacher is responsible for promoting student achievement in academic, social, and interpersonal development through the delivery of engaging, standards-aligned science instruction. This role includes implementing the division’s approved curriculum, differentiating instruction to meet diverse learner needs, documenting teaching and student progress, and maintaining a safe and supportive learning environment. The teacher communicates regularly with students, parents/guardians, and school leadership regarding student progress, expectations, and goals.

REQUISITE EDUCATION AND

SKILLS:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university
  • Valid Virginia Department of Education teaching license with an endorsement to teach middle school science, or eligibility to obtain such licensure to teach middle school science
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively serve a diverse student population
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build positive relationships with students, parents/guardians, and colleagues

ESSENTIAL JOB

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

(including but not limited to the following)

  • Complies with all applicable federal and state laws, State Board of Education regulations, and School Board and Superintendent policies and procedures
  • Performs duties as assigned to support the efficient and effective operation of the school system
  • Develops and implements lesson plans and instructional materials aligned with division curriculum, instructional philosophy, and course standards
  • Differentiates instruction to meet the academic and developmental needs of individual students and student subgroups
  • Provides individualized and small-group instruction as appropriate
  • Demonstrates effective knowledge and use of curriculum content, instructional materials, and resources
  • Prepares for classes and provides evidence of preparation upon request of the immediate supervisor
  • Implements effective classroom management strategies and instructional delivery practices
  • Encourages students to maintain high standards of academic achievement and classroom behavior
  • Administers and analyzes formative, summative, and developmental assessments to monitor student progress and inform instruction
  • Maintains accurate, timely records and reports as required by law and School Board policy
  • Monitors and assesses student progress toward learning objectives and communicates concerns to appropriate parties
  • Communicates regularly with parents/guardians regarding student progress, expectations, and achievement
  • Collaborates with parents/guardians to support student growth and reinforce classroom goals
  • Works collaboratively with school-based and division-based staff to maximize learning opportunities
  • Directs and supports instructional assistants, student teachers, and volunteers as assigned
  • Monitors students in various educational settings (e.g., classroom, hallways, field trips) to ensure a safe and positive learning environment
  • Participates in professional learning opportunities and attends meetings as required by the Superintendent or Principal
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the principal to support school operations

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to communicate effectively with students, staff, and families through verbal, written, and electronic means.
  • Ability to perform essential physical activities associated with teaching, including standing, walking, bending, reaching, lifting, and supervising students in various school environments.
  • Ability to operate classroom and office equipment, including computers and instructional technology.

  • Tuberculosis Screening
