This teacher plans and implements an instructional program and provides related educational services for students in grades K-5. The teacher manages student behavior, assesses and evaluates student achievement, and modifies instructional activities as required. The teacher carries out a variety of student monitoring and control activities and performs related duties as assigned. The teacher serves as a general education elementary classroom teacher (K-5) in a single or team or departmental setting, with potential to work independently in a unique teaching specialty.
Some positions are assigned to reading or technology labs. The teacher is under the general supervision of a principal or other designated administrator.
- Implements an instructional program that provides appropriate learning for each student by differentiating instruction.
- Plans and delivers instruction in adherence to the Prince William County Curriculum documents regarding specific teaching assignments.
- Assesses student abilities as related to desired educational goals, objectives, and outcomes.
- Plans appropriate instructional and/or learning strategies and activities, including the determination of appropriate principles of learning, classroom organizational structures, and the kind and level of materials.
- Manages the behavior of learners in an instructional setting to ensure an environment conducive to the learning process and assists and participates in the management of student behavior in other parts of the school, school grounds, and during lunch.
- Cooperates with and participates in the planning and evaluation of the school program.
- Requests the assistance of resource personnel as needed and works cooperatively to ensure an appropriate learning environment for all students.
- Participates in the professional development program of the school and School Division.
- Coordinates instructional activities and collaborates with other professional staff, both school and non-school-based, as required, to maximize learning opportunities.
- Follows the ethics of the profession.
- Supports actively parent/teacher or parent/student organizations and promotes parent/teacher partnerships.
- Enforces policies and regulations as established by the Prince William County School Board and staff in accordance with any program guidelines.
- Supervises pupil activities in buildings and on grounds during and after school hours and is responsible for the conduct and safety of students in the classroom and on school grounds.
- Demonstrates prompt and accurate written communications and reports.
- Adheres to county and school disciplinary procedures.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Knowledge of content, curriculum, methods, materials, and equipment of grade level(s) or instructional specialty(ies) to which assigned.
- Knowledge of child growth and development.
- Knowledge of Prince William County Public Schools curricula, program of studies related to assignments and public school mission, goals, and organization.
- Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional programs.
- Ability to plan and implement lessons using the Standards-Based Instructional Planning Process and based on Division and school objectives and the needs and abilities of assigned students.
- Ability to utilize multi-media and computer technology, as appropriate.
- Skills in oral and written communication; excellent human relations skills.
- If teaching music, ability to teach through demonstrating singing/choral techniques, movement, technique on pitched and unpitched instruments and proficiency on the piano, ability to distinguish pitches and tone quality.
- If teaching visual art, a personal portfolio demonstrating artistic ability and experience in a variety of media.
Minimum:
Bachelor's Degree.
- State:
Collegiate Professional, Post Graduate Professional, or appropriate vocational license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia with endorsements required for teaching assignments. - Other:
If assigned off-site tasks or serving as an itinerant, possession of a valid automobile operator’s license to operate a vehicle in Virginia is required.
