JOB SUMMARY

This position is responsible for professional development and support of classroom teachers and specialists working with students in mathematics. It facilitates professional learning communities to plan standards‑based instruction and assessment, models lessons, and co‑teaches. It assists teachers in effectively utilizing increased instructional time. The position requires in‑person work and does not include regular classroom responsibilities. The primary purpose is to improve student achievement by working directly with teachers to support their instruction of mathematics.

ESSENTIAL

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Serve as a liaison between the Student Learning Department and schools.
  • Collaborate with teachers and teacher teams in curriculum implementation using research‑based instructional strategies and formative assessments to support student mastery of the PWCS Curriculum and Virginia standards.
  • Support teachers to improve and sustain student mathematics achievement through co‑planning, co‑teaching, demonstration lessons, observations with growth‑producing feedback, and facilitation of teacher reflection.
  • Collaborate with English Learner, Special Education, and Gifted staff to increase the capacity of mathematics teachers and specialists by facilitating the use of successful, research‑based instructional strategies for diverse learners.
  • Use data to make instructional decisions and support teachers in doing the same.
  • Contribute to the planning of intervention, remediation, enrichment, or tutorial opportunities.
  • Work with school personnel to assess and plan for professional learning needs.
  • Design and implement professional learning to support school‑based goals in mathematics, aligned with the Division’s Mathematics Vision and PWCS Curriculum with an emphasis on the NCTM and NCSM core practices.
  • Participate in professional associations, conferences, and trainings related to instruction and professional development to maintain knowledge of current trends, research, and effective practice that support student learning.
  • Participate in mathematics teacher leader meetings and Division mathematics events.
  • Work with parents/guardians and community leaders to foster continuing home/school/community partnerships focused on students’ learning of mathematics.
  • Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Mathematics, or a related field.
  • Recent teaching experience at the elementary school level with a proven record of success with student learning in mathematics.
  • Teaching experience at multiple grade levels.
  • State:
    Hold a VDOE Collegiate Professional License with an endorsement in elementary education and/or math specialist for elementary.
  • At least 1 year of experience;
    Preferred 3‑5 years.
  • Knowledge of Virginia Mathematics Standards of Learning for grades kindergarten through five.
  • Knowledge of adult learning practices and experience in designing and delivering effective professional development to adults.
  • Instructional leadership skills including coaching adult learners individually and within teams.
  • Thorough knowledge of educational philosophy, educational research, instruction methods, current issues, cultural competence, and Division priorities.
  • Ability to resolve conflict, listen, and appropriately respond to concerns in a timely manner.

The work environment is an indoor office/classroom environment.
