Position Title:
Attendance Officer

Supervisor of Student Data Systems and Applications
General Responsibilities: Engages with families and students with attendance concerns through intervention meetings and home visits; makes referrals to appropriate authorities or professionals as needed.
Essential Duties- Assures that state compulsory attendance laws are
- Works with students, parents/guardians, and staff regarding problems which may interfere with a student’s progress in school and daily school
- Meets with students and parents to develop attendance contracts as
- Works with school personnel to monitor and follow through on the terms of the attendance
- Refers cases to other qualified school and community resources as
- Utilizes community resources while working with students and parents/guardians, and to collaborate in case
- Participates in meetings, such as Family Assessment & Services Team (FAST) and Child Study, as
- Organizes and conducts attendance groups utilizing Restorative Practices.
- Attends school truancy conferences with parents/guardians, students, and staff prior to filing a petition for a student in need of supervision or
- Files truancy petitions against students and parents/guardians as
- Represents the school division in truancy cases in juvenile
- Works with Manassas City Police Department to ensure the safe return of truant students to school or appropriate destination.
- Investigates reports of students not enrolled in school and verifies residency.
- Submits required reports related to truancy with the knowledge that such reports may be used as evidence in
- Testifies on behalf of the Commonwealth when probation officers file violation of probation charges related to
- Completes tasks assigned by juvenile
- Maintains appropriate communication with probation officers, social services, and the local police
- Provides input into the preparation of applications for legal release from
- Performs additional tasks as assigned.
- Knowledge of state compulsory attendance
- Knowledge of family support resources available through the school division, local government, and local
- Knowledge of court procedures and
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in
- Ability to prepare reports suitable for court
- Ability to prepare and maintain accurate and complete
- Ability to work effectively with students, parents, citizens, family support professionals, and school
Education and Experience
- Must possess a high school degree or equivalent (GED); associate degree or degree in criminal justice or related field
- Must possess a valid Virginia driver's license and be able to provide own transportation for carrying out
- Experience working with children and adolescents is
Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle or feel objects and controls. Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment, such as, but not limited to: a personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine.
Some climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, or repetitive motions required.
