JOB SUMMARYThe Supervisor of Early Childhood Programs provides leadership, supervision, coordination, and support for early childhood programming serving children from birth through age five across all ability levels. This position oversees the implementation and evaluation of the Virginia Preschool Initiative (VPI) and Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE) programs and works collaboratively with school staff, families, community agencies, and regional early learning providers to promote school readiness and positive outcomes for young learners.
The Supervisor supports instructional quality, program compliance, professional learning, and continuous improvement efforts across all early childhood programs. Responsibilities include supporting successful transitions for children and families, strengthening community partnerships, coordinating enrollment and outreach efforts, and ensuring alignment with applicable federal, state, and local regulations and standards.
REQUISITE EDUCATION AND SKILLS- Bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited college or university required.
- Preferred to hold or be eligible for a valid Virginia postgraduate professional teaching license with an endorsement in Early/Primary Education PreK–3 and/or Early Childhood Special Education (Birth–Age Five), or ability to obtain appropriate licensure within 30 days of employment.
- Required to hold or be eligible for a valid Virginia postgraduate professional license with an endorsement in Administration and Supervision PreK–12 or K–12, or ability to obtain appropriate licensure within 30 days of employment.
- Preferred to have CLASS (Classroom Assessment Scoring System) Observer Certification.
- Minimum of five (5) years of successful teaching experience required, including demonstrated impact on student achievement and experience supporting students with the greatest academic, behavioral, social-emotional, and/or developmental needs.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues and contribute to a professional community of adult learners.
- Demonstrated leadership skills and strong interpersonal abilities, including the ability to provide and receive constructive feedback.
- Strong knowledge of early childhood pedagogy, curriculum, child development, and instructional best practices.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Provides leadership, coordination, and oversight for division early childhood programs serving children from birth through age five across all ability levels.
- Supervises and evaluates Virginia Preschool Initiative (VPI) and Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE) programs and staff in accordance with division procedures and applicable regulations.
- Oversees successful transitions for children and families across early learning programs, including transitions into preschool and kindergarten.
- Supports implementation of developmentally appropriate instructional practices, curriculum, assessments, and school readiness initiatives aligned with state standards and division expectations.
- Oversees implementation and effective use of CLASS, Creative Curriculum, VKRP, VALLSS, and other approved instructional and assessment tools.
- Conducts classroom observations and provides coaching, feedback, modeling, co‑teaching, and professional development to support instructional effectiveness and program quality.
- Supports teachers and instructional staff in implementing effective classroom management strategies, interventions, and supports for students' academic, behavioral, social-emotional, and developmental needs.
- Uses assessment, observation, and program data to evaluate effectiveness, identify needs, and guide continuous improvement efforts.
- Oversees the annual VPI application, screening, enrollment, and coordinated placement processes in accordance with VDOE requirements.
