ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL - ELEMENTARY
LOCATION: Cougar Elementary School (Grades PreK-2)
SALARY: Managerial Pay Scale, Grade 16
HOURS: 7.5 hours per day, (Full-Time, Benefits Eligible)
POSITION LENGTH: 247 Days (12 Months)
FLSA STATUS: Exempt
IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR(S): School Principal
JOB SUMMARYThe Elementary Assistant Principal supports the school principal in providing leadership, coordination, supervision, and management of the school's instructional programs, operations, and overall educational environment. This position works collaboratively with staff, students, families, and the community to promote student success and a positive school culture.
REQUISITE KNOWLEDGE, EDUCATION AND SKILLS- Holds or is eligible for a Virginia Department of Education Postgraduate Professional License with an endorsement in Administration and Supervision PreK–12.
- Minimum of three years of successful teaching experience, including experience at the elementary school level.
- Comprehensive knowledge of current issues, best practices, educational trends, and principles related to elementary education and school leadership.
- Knowledge of curriculum development, instructional strategies, assessment practices, data analysis, and budget development.
- Ability to assist in the administration and management of an elementary school’s instructional programs, operations, and daily activities.
- Demonstrated ability to plan, organize, supervise, and evaluate the work of staff and support personnel.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to plan, implement, monitor, and evaluate school programs and initiatives.
- Ability to support and lead staff in achieving school and division goals while fostering a culture of continuous improvement.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively interact with students, families, staff, community members, and other stakeholders.
- Ability to establish and maintain positive and productive working relationships with students, parents, staff, school officials, and the public.
- Demonstrated leadership skills, including the ability to motivate, mentor, and inspire others to achieve their highest potential.
- Ability to serve as a positive role model and uphold the highest standards of professionalism, ethics, and integrity.
- Comply with all applicable federal and state laws, Virginia Department of Education regulations, School Board policies, and administrative regulations.
- Perform duties assigned by the School Board, Superintendent, Principal or other division administrator to support the effective and efficient operation of the school division.
- Serve as the primary administrator in the absence of the principal.
- Assist the principal in developing, implementing, and maintaining an effective educational program aligned with federal and state requirements, School Board policies, and division goals.
- Support the principal in the overall administration and management of the school, including the interpretation and enforcement of school and division policies and procedures.
- Assist in fostering a positive, collaborative, and results-oriented school culture focused on continuous improvement and student achievement.
- Confer and collaborate with students, parents, faculty, staff, and community members to address school-related concerns and promote student success.
- Assist in supervising and monitoring student attendance, counseling services, child study processes, assessment programs, and other student support services.
- Support the development, implementation, and evaluation of curriculum, instructional programs, and school improvement initiatives.
- Assist in monitoring compliance with federal, state, and local requirements, including accountability measures, assessment programs, and special education regulations.
- Maintain effective communication and cooperative working relationships with parents, guardians, and community stakeholders.
- Support teachers in evaluating instructional methods and materials, developing effective learning plans, and implementing sound classroom management practices.
- Assist in coordinating school operations, including transportation, custodial services, nutrition services, and other support functions.
- Assist with school safety programs, including safety inspections, emergency preparedness activities, drills, and evacuation procedures.
- Support the administration of student discipline and behavioral interventions in accordance with division policies and procedures.
- Plan, coordinate, and facilitate professional development opportunities that support staff growth and instructional excellence.
- Collaborate with parent organizations, faculty committees, student groups, and community partners to advance school initiatives and educational objectives.
- Maintain and model high standards of professionalism, ethical conduct, and integrity.
- Demonstrate and promote equitable, inclusive, and nondiscriminatory practices in all aspects of school operations.
