Job Summary

The Principal serves as the educational leader of Charles J. Colgan High School, overseeing daily operations, managing budgets, shaping school policies, fostering a safe environment, and collaborating with staff, students, and parents. The role drives academic excellence and student success, implements continuous improvement planning aligned with the district’s strategic plan, and provides instructional leadership to promote effective teaching practices. The Principal also manages personnel and maintains school facilities.

Grade 21 Salary Range: $152,807 – $247,702 annually, plus a comprehensive benefits package.

Work Schedule

250 days a year, Full Time.

Essential Responsibilities
  • Supervise, evaluate, and provide instructional direction to all staff to implement the total curriculum.
  • Organize the school to provide an optimum learning environment and experiences for students in both curricular and extracurricular programs.
  • Assign duties and responsibilities to assistant principals and other key personnel to maintain orderly day‑to‑day operation.
  • Manage appropriated and non‑appropriated funds to ensure accomplishment of school programs.
  • Direct in‑service programs for staff that focus on maintaining and improving current programs and planning future programs.
  • Provide effective public relations and communications within the school and the community.
  • Select and assign personnel to ensure the best utilization of their experience and skills.
  • Evaluate and supervise staff to maintain a level of competence that ensures the fulfillment of educational goals.
  • Coordinate the use of central office staff to develop and maintain effective school programs and services.
  • Establish and maintain effective school discipline.
  • Provide athletic and extracurricular activities appropriate for the high school student.
  • Manage the operation and maintenance of building and grounds.
  • Assume a leadership role in the development and implementation of the continuous improvement plan and budget in cooperation with the school advisory council.
  • Assist in the coordination of central office classified support personnel who provide services to the local school.
  • Implement, monitor, and assist in the evaluation of the division‑wide curriculum action plan at the local school level.
  • Perform the responsibilities charged to the principal by the local School Board.
Qualifications for Successful Performance

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Behaviors

  • Knowledge of the instructional process, public relations, school finance, school law, personnel management, administration, supervision, curriculum, and educational processes.
  • Demonstrates leadership qualities and personal characteristics necessary to work effectively with students, teachers, and parents.
Education or Equivalency Requirements
  • Minimum:
    Master’s Degree.
  • Earned a Pupil Personnel or Postgraduate Professional License.
Work Experience Requirements
  • Significant portion of successful, full‑time experience as an administrator.
  • Significant portion of experience in the area or level supervised.
Certification and License Requirements

Must hold a Virginia teaching certificate endorsed in Administration/Supervision PreK‑12. If a current VA Postgraduate Professional License is not held, a reciprocal out‑of‑state certification with a comparable endorsement is required.

Work Environment and Physical & Mental Requirements

The work environment is primarily indoor, including standard office and classroom settings. Functions are performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions; minor inconveniences such as noise, exposure to computer screens, and crowded conditions may occur.
