The Biology Teacher is responsible for planning and implementing a comprehensive instructional program for high school students. The role includes managing student behavior, assessing student achievement, modifying instructional activities as needed, and participating in school‑wide events and professional development. The teacher may work independently or within a team, and may be assigned to science labs or other educational laboratories that require a higher level of monitoring to ensure student safety.
EssentialResponsibilities
- Assess student achievement continuously and maintain appropriate documentation for institutional and individual reporting.
- Plan and deliver instruction using appropriate materials, strategies, and technology, and manage instructional time to maximize student learning.
- Manage classroom behavior to create a conducive learning environment, and assist in managing behavior in other school areas.
- Coordinate instructional activities with other staff to maximize learning opportunities.
- Work in a variety of instructional settings (self‑contained, team, itinerant, or field) and may make off‑school site visits.
- Participate in professional development, staff meetings, and in‑service activities as required.
- Maintain continuous communication with parents and students about expectations and progress.
- Assign and supervise instructional assistants, parent volunteers, and student volunteers.
- Serve at two or more schools on a regular basis as an itinerant teacher.
- Support school‑wide student activities and social events.
- Monitor behavior in non‑instructional areas and intervene when necessary, reporting to the appropriate administrator.
- Collaborate with guidance counselors, librarians, and other professionals to carry out school wide instructional activities.
- Knowledge of the instructional process and content, curriculum, and methods relevant to biology.
- Understanding of pre‑adolescent and adolescent growth and development.
- Knowledge of Prince William County Curriculum and school division mission.
- Proficiency in the use of multi‑media and computer technology to enhance learning.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills; strong interpersonal relations.
- Ability to plan and implement lessons based on Division and school objectives.
- For those teaching specialized content: proficiency in relevant trade or subject matter at a journey‑level or higher.
- Minimum:
Bachelor’s Degree in Biology or related field. - State certification:
Virginia State Teaching Credential with endorsement(s) required for biology instruction. - For itinerant or off‑site duties: valid automobile operator’s license.
- Indoor classroom/office setting.
- Exposure to minor noise and computer use; occasional crowded conditions.
