Job SummaryThis teacher develops and implements an effective instructional program and provides related educational services based on students’ Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). Responsibilities include managing student behavior, assessing and evaluating student achievement, and modifying instructional activities as needed. The role teaches the Prince William County Public Schools career education curriculum, EMPLOY, to prepare students with disabilities for the transition from school to work and independent living.
Instructional focus areas include researching occupational fields, developing work traits and attitudes, building job‑specific skills, conducting job searches, maintaining employment, and balancing worker, family, and civic roles. Work is performed under the general supervision of the principal or other designated administrator.
- Perform duties and responsibilities of teachers as listed in PRCSP Regulation 561.01-1.
- Assess student achievement and maintain appropriate assessment and evaluation documentation.
- Plan and implement instructional strategies and activities, select appropriate instructional materials, manage instructional time, and provide learning experiences tailored to student needs.
- Provide opportunities for community‑based career awareness and exploration, and develop marketable job skills through coordinated activities related to the student’s interests and goals (EMPLOY Internship).
- Coordinate and supervise community‑based work experiences (EMPLOY V) that allow students to apply and refine knowledge, attitudes, and skills.
- Collaborate with stakeholders to develop, implement, and monitor school and community‑based instructional activities and carry out school‑wide instructional or related activities.
- Make off‑school site visits to monitor student progress and confer with employers and other school staff.
- Provide input into IEPs.
- Participate in the development of Behavioral Intervention Plans using the Functional Behavior Assessment Process.
- Utilize assistive technology and specialized equipment as appropriate in the classroom and community settings.
- Manage student behavior in classroom and community settings to ensure a conducive learning environment and assist in behavior management across the school.
- Participate in school staff, department, and special education meetings, and in specialized staff development activities to improve job‑related skills and apply best practices.
- Communicate with students regularly about instructional expectations and progress.
- Foster partnerships and maintain continuous communication with parents, both written and oral, to keep them informed of student progress.
- Assign work to and supervise instructional assistants.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications- Knowledge of career education content, curriculum, methods, and materials.
- Knowledge of human growth and development.
- Ability to apply current research and theory to instructional programs.
- Ability to plan and implement lessons based on division and school objectives and the needs and abilities of assigned students.
- Effective oral and written communication skills; excellent human relations skills.
- Education:
Minimum – Bachelor’s Degree;
Preferred – Master’s Degree. - Certification:
Virginia teaching certificate in career and technical education or special education. - Work experience:
Equivalent to at least the responsibilities described above (specific years not required here). - Work environment:
Indoor classroom or indoor environment; physical demands include regular use of computer screens and occasional exposure to noise and minor heating or cooling variations.
