Building Principals Job Summary

The High School English Teacher supports student success in both academic and interpersonal development by implementing the division’s approved curriculum and delivering effective, standards-aligned instruction. The teacher is responsible for planning and documenting instruction; monitoring and documenting student progress, activities, and outcomes; and addressing the individual learning needs of students.

The position requires creating and maintaining a safe, supportive, and engaging learning environment that promotes student achievement and positive classroom culture. The teacher also provides ongoing communication and feedback to students, parents/guardians, and school administrators regarding student progress, expectations, and academic goals.

Requisite Education and Skills
  • Must hold a Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university.
  • Must possess a valid Virginia Department of Education teaching license with an endorsement in English, or be eligible to obtain such licensure within 30 days of employment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and sensitivity to the needs of a diverse student population, with the ability to create an inclusive and supportive learning environment.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, colleagues, and school administrators.

Job Responsibilities and Duties (including but not limited to the following)
  • Complies with all applicable federal and state laws, Virginia Board of Education regulations, and policies and procedures established by the School Board and Superintendent.
  • Performs duties and responsibilities as assigned by the School Board and Superintendent to support the efficient and effective operation of the school division.
  • Develops and implements lesson plans and instructional materials aligned with the division’s instructional philosophy, Virginia Standards of Learning, and adopted curriculum. Provides individualized and small-group instruction to meet the diverse learning needs of students.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of evidence-based literacy practices aligned with the Science of Reading, including explicit, systematic instruction in foundational reading skills, language development, and comprehension strategies, as appropriate to the assignment.
  • Implements an instructional program that differentiates instruction to support the academic growth and achievement of all learners.
  • Maintains accurate and timely student records and reports in accordance with legal requirements and School Board policies.
  • Works collaboratively with teachers, administrators, instructional support staff, and other school personnel, and maintains positive relationships with parents, guardians, and community members.
  • Provides guidance and direction to instructional assistants, student teachers, assistant teachers, and volunteers to support effective classroom instruction and meet the needs of individual students.
  • Encourages students to set and maintain high expectations for academic achievement and responsible behavior.
  • Demonstrates strong content knowledge and effective instructional practices aligned with the assigned curriculum area.
  • Prepares thoroughly for assigned classes and provides evidence of preparation upon request of the immediate supervisor.
  • Utilizes instructional materials, technology, and resources effectively to support the adopted curriculum and enhance student learning.
  • Administers and interprets developmental assessments and content-specific assessments to monitor student learning and guide instructional decisions.
  • Collaborates with school-based and division staff, as well as other professionals when appropriate, to coordinate instructional activities and maximize student learning opportunities.
