An essential function of this position is the ability to work in person and physically report for work on site.

Job Summary

This position plans and implements an instructional program and provides related educational services for students in grades K-5. The position manages student behavior, assesses and evaluates student achievement, and modifies instructional activities as required, carrying out a variety of student monitoring and control activities. The employee serves as a general education elementary classroom teacher for K-5; classes may be single, team, or departmental, with opportunities to work independently in a specialty area.

The teacher may also be assigned to reading or technology labs and works under the general supervision of a principal or other designated administrator.

Essential Responsibilities
  • Implements an instructional program, providing appropriate learning for each student by differentiating instruction.
  • Plans and delivers instruction in adherence to the Prince William County Curriculum documents regarding specific teaching assignments.
  • Assesses student abilities as related to desired educational goals, objectives, and outcomes.
  • Plans appropriate instructional and/or learning strategies and activities, including determination of appropriate principles of learning, classroom organizational structures, and kind and level of materials.
  • Manages the behavior of learners in an instructional setting to ensure a conducive learning environment, and assists and participates in management of student behavior in other parts of the school, school grounds, and during lunch; no student should be left alone.
  • Cooperates with and participates in the planning and evaluation of the school program.
  • Requests the assistance of resource personnel as needed and works cooperatively to ensure an appropriate learning environment for all students.
  • Participates in the professional development program of the schools and School Division.
  • Coordinates instructional activities and collaborates with other professional staff both school and non-school-based, as required, to maximize learning opportunities.
  • Follows the ethics of the profession.
  • Supports actively a parent/teacher or parent/student organization and promotes parent/teacher partnerships.
  • Enforces policies and regulations as established by the Prince William County School Board and staff in accordance with any program guidelines.
  • Supervises pupil activities in buildings and on grounds during and after school hours and is responsible for the conduct and safety of students in the classroom and on school grounds; no group of students should be left unattended.
  • Demonstrates prompt and accurate written communications and reports.
  • Adheres to county and school disciplinary procedures.

Qualifications for Successful Performance
  • Knowledge of the Instructional Process.
  • Knowledge of content, curriculum, methods, materials, and equipment of instructional specialties to which assigned.
  • Knowledge of Prince William County Curriculum related to assignments and School Division mission, goals, and organization.
  • Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional programs.
  • Skill in the use of multimedia and computer technology to enhance learning.
  • Ability to plan and implement lessons based on Division and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned.
  • Skill in oral and written communication; excellent human relations skills.
  • For teaching a foreign language, proficiency in oral and written communications in that language.
  • For teaching choral music, ability to teach through demonstrating singing/choral techniques, proficiency on the piano; ability to distinguish pitches and tone quality.
  • For teaching instrumental music classes, proficiency in one or more musical instruments and ability to model correct playing techniques; ability to distinguish pitches and tone quality.
  • For teaching visual art, a personal portfolio demonstrating artistic ability and experience in a variety of media.
  • For teaching in career and technical education, journey-level proficiency in that trade is required with on-the-job journey, lead, or supervisory experience desirable.
  • Knowledge of child growth and development.
Education and Certification Requirements

Minimum:
Bachelor's Degree.

Certification:
Collegiate Professional, Post Graduate Professional, or appropriate vocational license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia with endorsement(s) required for teaching assignment(s); must be eligible for Virginia Teacher Certification Program or licensure.
