Position Overview
Title: EL Teacher – 195 Day (Full Time, 195 Days) –
Location:
Manassas, VA.
This position accelerates English language acquisition and content learning for English learners across math, language arts, science, and social studies to meet classroom expectations, passing SOL scores, and graduation requirements. The teacher serves as a cross-cultural liaison, implementing EL program procedures, and provides leadership and consultation as a second language specialist.
Essential Responsibilities- Delivers rigorous and targeted instruction to English Learners (ELs) to accelerate academic English and content-area knowledge aligned with county curriculum and ELD standards.
- Provides Sheltered Instruction tailored to students’ English Language Proficiency levels using approved instructional delivery models.
- Collaborates with school staff to co‑plan, co‑teach, and co‑assess as scheduling requires.
- Monitors progress, promotes, and advocates for ELs’ participation in all academic and extracurricular activities.
- Recommends instructional, assessment, and classroom adjustments to general education staff and communicates them to parents through a Limited English Proficiency Review Committee.
- Serves as the second‑language acquisition specialist, maintaining a knowledge base of research, laws, and best practices.
- Liaises between ELs, families, and the school, providing cross‑cultural information to foster positive relationships.
- Provides professional learning to school staff on second‑language acquisition, acculturation, sheltered instruction, and effective teaching practices.
- Advocates for appropriate EL identification in collaboration with Special Education, Gifted Education, and other programs.
- Participates in division‑level and EL Program professional learning required for staff.
- Attends school meetings where EL representation is needed, such as school councils and multicultural committees.
- Maintains ongoing communication with EL families in comprehensible language, using division‑wide interpretation resources as needed.
- Annually assesses all English Learners (K‑12) using Virginia Department of Education–approved proficiency assessments.
- Implements all procedures of the EL Program as outlined in PWCS Regulation 600‑4 and related guidance.
- Maintains required documentation for each EL in the Service Delivery Plan within the HUB student information system.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Knowledge of second‑language acquisition and acculturation processes.
- Knowledge of research, legal requirements, program models, and methodological approaches for multilingual learners.
- Knowledge of techniques for teaching English, reading, and content to multilingual learners.
- Knowledge of approved assessments for placement and monitoring of student achievement.
- Knowledge of administrative procedures for implementing a formal EL program in compliance with laws.
- Native or near‑native proficiency in all English language skills (understanding, speaking, reading, writing). Bilingualism in a common student language is an asset, except where a bilingual model is used.
- Excellent interpersonal skills to collaborate with staff and provide ongoing professional learning as a specialist.
Minimum:
Bachelor's Degree. Candidates must possess an endorsement in ESL or be eligible for the Virginia State Certification Program.
The work is performed indoors in standard classroom or office settings. Employees may experience minor environmental factors such as noise, computer screens, and crowded conditions. Physical, mental, and schedule demands are typical for full‑time instructional staff.
