MIDDLE SCHOOL MATH TEACHER - 195 DAY
Job SummaryThis position plans and implements an instructional program and provides related educational services for students. It manages student behavior, assesses and evaluates student achievement, and modifies instructional activities as required, while carrying out a variety of student monitoring and control activities. It serves as a general education classroom teacher; classes taught may be single or multi‑grade level, subject, skill, or specialty oriented.
The teacher usually performs duties within a team or departmental setting but may work independently in a unique teaching specialty. The position may be assigned to science labs or industrial arts/technology or other education labs where greater than average monitoring is required to diminish the chance of accidental injury to students. The teacher performs work under the general supervision of a principal and/or other designated administrator.
Responsibilities
- Assesses continually student achievement and maintains appropriate assessment and evaluation documentation for institutional and individual reporting purposes.
- Plans and implements appropriate instructional and/or learning strategies and activities, including determination of appropriate kind and level of materials, provides appropriate learning experiences, manages allotted learning time to maximize student achievement, and utilizes a variety of instructional materials and available multi‑media and computer technology to enhance learning.
- Manages the behavior of learners in an instructional setting to ensure the environment is conducive to the learning process and assists and participates in management of student behavior in other parts of the school, center, school grounds, or work site.
- Coordinates instructional activities with other professional staff, both school and non‑school‑based, as required, to maximize learning opportunities.
- Works in a self‑contained, team, departmental, itinerant capacity, or in field or may make off‑school site visits to monitor students, confer with employers, or site instructors.
- Participates in in‑service and professional development activities and staff meetings, as required or assigned.
- Fosters partnerships and ensures continuous communication with parents, both written and oral, to keep them informed of student(s) progress.
- Communicates continually with students on instructional expectations to keep them informed of their progress in meeting those expectations.
- Assigns work to and supervises instructional assistants, parent and student volunteers.
- Serves at two or more schools on a regular basis as itinerant.
- Supports or participates in school‑wide student activities and social events.
- Monitors student behavior in non‑instructional areas and intervenes to control and modify disruptive behavior, reports to appropriate administrator, as assigned or required.
- Collaborates with other professionals (guidance counselors, librarians, etc.) to carry out school‑wide instructional or related activities as needed.

- Knowledge of the Instructional Process.
- Knowledge of content, curriculum, methods, materials, and equipment of instructional specialty(ies) to which assigned.
- Knowledge of pre‑adolescent and adolescent growth and development.
- Knowledge of Prince William County Curriculum related to assignments and School Division mission, goals, and organization.
- Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional programs.
- Skill in the use of multi‑media and computer technology to enhance learning.
- Ability to plan and implement lessons based on Division and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned.
- Skill in oral and written communication; excellent human relations skills.
- If teaching a foreign language, proficiency in oral and written communications in that language.
- If teaching choral music, ability to teach through demonstrating singing/choral techniques, proficiency on the piano; ability to distinguish pitches and tone quality.
